Went to the dealer today for the second time to have steering play/wander looked at. the first trip they adjusted the sector shaft explaining that they have been coming from the factory too tight. no improvement. today I thought I was going to get the usual "will order a new box" and I was going to make sure it was a delphi, but instead they had one and installed it (its a saginaw box). I found this out after they were done installing it. the one that came on my truck was a delphi which had a lot of play and needed two hand to opporate for parallel parking. The new saginaw is much, much easier to turn (with a finger) and steering is much inproved. I don't think they checked alignment though. when I first left dealer my sterring wheel was way out from being plumb. so i when back and had them fix that. I could never get dealer to admitt that they checked the alignment. they would just say we checked everything (like I beleave that). there is a slight wander on certain surfaces. I think i'm down to just needing a good alignment.

I will review old post but off hand does anyone know what alignment spec's have been working good. I hear that the factory alignment spec. 's may not be perfect. I can remember reading something about adding a degree to caster or camber or something???

There was a TSB out last month on alignment specs for the Rams. It is the same specs as here on the TDR that a DC tech has been using for years. FWIW Local 5 screw dealer says they can only set them to factory tolerance, which can be so far out that the truck will run 12" dog leged as we all know. Take it to a good allignment shop and pay to have it done correctly to thies specs and not by the dealer who will only get it into factory tolerances for toe, caster and camber.
Thies spec's work... . They were posted on 8-30-00 by Rebel

left wheel , right wheel
Caster 3. 2 , 3. 5
cross caster -. 3
Camber -. 10 ,-. 10
Cross Camber 0. 0
toe - standard specs, maybe a little out if you tow a lot

Since were on this topic,I would like to know the difference between the Saginaw box and the Delphi box. Is it the innards of the unit and it's construction or what?Just got my truck back two days ago from the shop for some front end repair and it now has the Delphi power gear in it. It had a Saginaw before the repair was done. TIA.

Jnutter, I'm assuming that your "WELL" is addressing the front end elignment. I would think after having nine different boxes on your truck you would know the difference between Delphi and Saginaw. #ad
I have not had the front end aligned yet. I will post the results when I have them.

Phil, I'm not an expert on steering box's. but have tried to rebuild one once (i emphasize "tried"). do your self a favor and never try rebuilding one. Its a bear getting those balls back into the rack piston and when I got done it would automaticly turn to the right when I would start the motor. Keep me away from your steering box #ad

by what I have read, been told and seen... basically the delphi and saginaw are one in the same. saginaw I understand is the name of the box under GM production. Delphi is the name of the same box under the production of some other company that GM sold the design to. I was told this in a e-mail to me from someone reading my TDR post. sorry I can't remember who! I have deleted e-mail.

Hope this info help. .
