Just checking out some info on outboards motors and wondered why the 9. 9 hp and not 10hp? Is the new 4 stroke any good? What engines are the best? Are any US made? Any good/ reputable places to buy? Thanks.

Oh yes

Four strokers are the ONLY way to go. They cost more, but the fuel efficiency, quiet running and slow trolling speed are way better than two strokes. Hey, a 40 HP cahn troll as slow as a 9. 9 two stroke! The only true American made is the Evinrude/Johnson, but are owned by Bombardier in Canada. Mercury's are Suzuki and Honda according to a friend in the biz. These four strokes are really good motors, and should last a long time. Some even have electronic shifting and throttle control.

9. 9 is the actual flywheel rating of the engines. Two stroke 9. 9 are usually the same displacement as 15's, but with bigger carbs and timing curves.

First of all, it doesn't really matter if they are any good or not(which by the way they are awsome)they are mandated by 2006. After that there will not be a 2 stroke made anymore. And Ol Ron said all the rest.

I think the 9. 9 came about years ago because the rules for lots of small impoundments restricted the OB motor size to "under 10 horse power". They probably still had 10 horse power but the decal said 9. 9 so they were legal. Around here, Academy has some good prices on small motors. When you decide what you want, do a search for that engine on the web. bg

Yamaha?

Yes, what all these guys said. I've been fishing with a Honda 50 for

about 8 years now and love it - change oil and filter once a year, Mobil 1

and put plugs and water pump impeller in it once, but just because I felt

I needed to, not because of how it ran. I troll with a baffle plate and it

runs sweet about 1. 5 mph. Are you looking at a 9. 9 as primary power

on a small boat, or as a "kicker"? I'm trying to trade up to a bigger boat

as we speak, it has a 115 2-stroke on it, so if I get it, I'm looking at

putting a Yamaha T8 on it for trolling duty. Heard lots of good stuff

about them, but the Merc 9. 9 "Pro Kicker" looks nice too.

What about those E-TEC outboards by Evinrude? According to their website, they have all of the advantages of other two-stroke engines without the EPA hassles.

There has to be a downside to these, but I haven't found one yet. If the hype is true it sounds like they might give the four-strokes a run for their money.
