Does anyone have hands on experience with outdoor woodburners for heating a home or barn? I have begun to research this, and there are a lot of different companies out there. Some offer dual heat, such as wood/propane. You can go with a radiant type of heat, steam, or forced air using a heat exchanger. All input would be appreciated as to what works, what doesn't. .

water or steam through a heat exchanger is what is used around here (IL)

make sure you get a boiler that is sealed. the ones that are open loose too much water from evaporation. and you are always filling them back up. the drawback to that is the fire has to be controlled well or you could hava a steam explosion.

there is one I used to know of, but i cant think of the name of it right now. maybe over the weekend i will think of it.

check out www.centralboiler.com

i bought one and did the install myself.

the model i got will heat 500,000 sq ft.

i have enough heat for a couple homes and barns.

i also heat my hot water(saving $100. on a 2 month elec. bill)

there is also a kit to attach to your clothes dryer for free clothes drying.

i'm leaving mine run year round. one or two chunks of wood last a day or more this time of year.

it will do everything they claim and more.

you must have a free supply of wood to actually save by using this set-up.

i had an indoor wood furnace and this is so much nicer,,,all the mess is outside,,no fear of chimney fires,,no splitting wood,,wet wood is ok.

i have other links of wood furnace manuf's if you want them.

Holy Crap, You Guys live in mansions back east.

500,000 sq feet :--)

sorry:eek: ,,

my furnace is rated 500,000 BTU not 500,000 sq ft like i stated above

ever type one thing and be thinking another??

anyway,,more than enough heat to do a couple houses and a barn.

i went overkill with the water to air exchanger i put into my forced hot air system. my home requires about a 70,000 btu furnace and i put in a 140,000 btu exchanger.

Dont know much about outdoor stoves, but have seen many in these parts. Some people even burn bales of hay/straw in them. Might be a special kind that can do that. Last year I ripped out my gas stove and put in a free standing Blaze King. It's got a catalyst that it burns through once it gets up and runnin. It'll burn about 30 lbs of wood a day and heats the whole house. We sure love it, I turned off the pilot light to the boiler and no more LP bill. The propane truck driver asked if I was getting propane some where else. I had to show him the smoke stack on the house. If anyone wants to go with an inside wood stove, I'd recommend the Blaze King.

PS I work for myself, not Blaze King or anyone else. ;)
