"And at least one hotel outhouse in Montana had a two story outhouse with a plank from the second floor going over to the second floor of the outhouse. The `droppings' fell through a 1 foot channel down past the first level into the hole. "

Pretty interesting place to read up on old ways of doing things.

Beneath the spreading buckeye tree

the weathered outhouse stands,

a sanctuary where you're free

from labor's harsh demands.

Of all the big city's luxuries,

tile, porcelain, or chrome,

none satisfies & gives sweet ease

like that fragrant shack back

home.

Anyone ever see that one with two signs on it? Upper level for managment, lower for shop. Wish I could dig that one up.

On water devining, dowsing or what ever ya call it.

Before my son got his own drilling business, he worked for another drilling company.

For 11 years that company kept detailed records of all the wells they drilled, especially whether and how much water they got and whether it was located by devining or just where it was convenient or was out of the way etc.

In the end, after thousands of wells, there was less than one percentage point difference between successfull wells located by devining and those located by convenience etc.

We were going to develope a place near Medford and made an offer conditional on getting a 7 gal per min. well. One of the guys on my son's crew was a souix indian who was really commited to devining so he and another beliver found two locations where I would find water at about 125 feet; in each case I gave up with a 400' dry hole.

The indian boy then said we should pull out all the stops and bring out a guy who he knew was visiting from S. Dakota who was the Souix Tribal medicine man and who was known far and wide as the greatest deviner in the country. Out of curiosity, I said "sure, bring him out. " He spent about 3/4 hour communing with the spirits and walking about with his "red willow" branches. He found a spot where there was "lots of water" at 75feet.

Again I gave up with a 400' dry hole; 1200 feet of dry holes= big dent in wallet!!

On our present home site, I told my son to drill "about 30 feet from the corner of the shop" so it would be convenient to locate pressure tank etc in the shop!---bingo! 15 gal per min. at 50 feet.

We belong to a private campground here in PA. Every summer they kept running out of water. The campground hired people to find water, they used all kinds of high tech stuff including measurements from aircraft. They picked the place for the well. While the workers were clearing a road to this well location, an old timer showed the campground manager how to use a divining rod. Thinking it was "neat" but not trusting it because its not science, the manager walked around the property playing with her devining rod.

Anyway, the road was finished, the well diggers moved in and drilled several hundred feet to find hardly any water. The well digger was about to leave and the manager stopped them, "I want you to drill a well right here" pointing to where her devining rod said there was water. The well digger guy says "there is not any water here, but its your money! To make a long story short, we now have a great well at our campground!

Here's a very interesting story about divining. I used this once to locate a sewer line, but didn't understand how it worked until I read this story.

Sounds as if you spent some spare time in the privy waxing the dolphin
