Sorry, but I'd say 'forget it!" Not worth the bucks. I have one from the factory and it is a neat toy, but it is a toy. I sure wouldn't bet my life on the readings it puts out.

Not to be flip, but buy a solar calculator for under $5 and pocket the difference and buy something else that you'll enjoy on your Dodge.

So don't be envious. I'd trade mine in a wink for some stainless tubular steps, but then what would I put in the hole. #ad

I was thinking about the temp gauge, but after going back and reading some of the other posts, i think i will say forget it!! it does not seem worth the hassle. thanks for the reply's guys!!

Hey mongoose,
I've been the same way about the temp display. My trucks haven't had the overhead computer, because I don't care for the other features, but temp would be nice.
Have you ever seen the Chevy vehicles that have the temp and compass built into the interoir rearview mirror? The mirror is made by a companycalled Mitocorp. Try this site neat mirrors They sell the interior mirror with the nice features, which maybe a possobility for me. They also make the famous "turn signal mirrors".

That would work perfectly for what i want. and it looks like it is a fraction of the cost!!! Thanks!! Will keep you posted on the install if i get one!

Back in the olden days (see my sig) the computer wasn't available but the compas/thermometer was. SLT/Laramies had 'em but I don't know what year they switched to a computer. A salvage yard ought to let it go cheap (not a crash part) and you could do your own wiring. The temp sender is on the left front bumper bracket. Good luck.

I've been trying to dig up some info on adding the compass/thermometer to my truck (1996) and this is the closest thread I could come up with.

My dealer quoted me $1200. Whats up with that? Said something about changing all kinds of stuff.

I imagine all you'd need would be the console and the temp sensor itself, and like Extreme1 said this should be available in a junkyard. I'm sure I can figure out how to wire it without too much headache.

Does anybody have any more inout on this? I know I seen the console at a salvage yard the other day, but passed it by because of what the dealer said (I should never believe them about anything).

Thanks for the input,
Ryan

The overhead computer is part of the travel convienence group, and when I ordered my truck in Jan of this year that option only cost me $290. I dont know where they are getting $1200 from. Sounds fishy #ad

I'm not looking to install if for a MPG reading, mainly for a temp reading.

I looked at the mirrors from Mito but I'd prefer to fit something in the too small for anything, empty factory overhead console.

What about the one that came in the 98's, it has a compass and temp. I bet the wire is already there. See if there is a wire running out to the grill for the temp pickup. on the 98 it is on the DS of center.

Ok here is what I've found out, if anybody is interested.

I don't know anyhting about the newer ones with the MPG readout, but it can be done on an older one without too much headache.

You need the computer, the wiring harness (which you can probably fab yourself), and the sensor. As I understand it, some trucks already are semi-wired for this thing, with a plug for the sensor up front and the wiring harness for the computer up top. As far as I can tell mine has neither, but I'll have to look harder for the pigtail for the sensor up front.

It looks like I'm gonna shop some salvage yards first beccause the computer alone list for around $350.

If you have a 12 valve truck it should be easy! As far as i know the 12v trucks never had MPG readouts becuase the pump is not electronic at all. I wouldn't think the compass computer would be all that complicated?? But who knows anyways. I love the overhead console in my 99 its accurate within +/_ . 1MPG at every fillup( i quit checking it now i trust it). Also the temp sender in only like $13 new... surprised me.

1200 bucks a lot for something that really don't tell you your true MPG!

I inquired with www.mopar4less.com about doing the same to my 2001. 5 and was told that it would be about $1200 to do. Bummer on that. Anybody else have any different experiences?

If anybody is interested Camper World has a compass ,thermometer combo. I,ts 3 1/4x3 3/4 and runs on batteries or can be wired to 12 volts. I,ts 100 bucks without membership 90 with. I miss the thermometer, might try it.

If you are looking for an electronic compass try http://www.precisionnav.com/prec.html. I have the co-pilot. As easy as plugging in a radar and it't accurate also. However, you can find them on other sites for cheaper. This site is good for information. My . 02 worth.
