My 97 had a recall for an overheating headlamp switch assembly, which could start a fire. The recall procedure cured the problem.

My neighbor has a 2001 and is experiencing the same problem, over heating of the switch and area around it. It actually gets so warm that it is uncomfortable to keep your hand on the panel area around switch. Have searched for a recall with negative results. Does anyone have info regarding the 2001 3500 turbo diesel with regard to this problem?

You could do a search, the topic has been brought up several times..... I just leave the instrument lights on bright (it's easier to read the egt, fuel pressure, and boost gages) that keeps the rheostat from getting hot.

Yep run the lights on full brite and you should not have any issues. Mine runs cool but if I dim the lights the same thing happens. The switch just cannot dissapate the heat form the reduced light output.

I drilled the hole in the adjacent A/C duct. Then run the A/C or vent with blower on and that vent (one by the headlight switch) closed. Helps some, but not a lot.

The less resistance (ie the brighter the instrument panel lights) there is the less heat dissapation the switch does.

I read where one member put a small 12v fan back there, but then that would be a failure point eventually.
