2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Over Load leafs

On my 2002 4x4 I noticed that the overload leaf is not connected except at the center of leaf pack. I don't recall ever seeing such a setup and wondered if there shouldn't be something else at the end of the overload leaf to hold it to the regular leaf pack. How do these work if they do not connect to the regular leaf pack except at the center U-bolts.

When you load your truck the truck the ends of the overload springs will come in contact with pads that are mounted to the frame.
