I have a 98. 5 with an automatic trans. It has just under 50K miles on it. The other day after a 425 mile round trip to Lethbridge, Alberta and back, just as we came back into town off the Interstate, the transmission started shifting in and out of overdrive. It acts like it cannot make up its mind. It has continued to do this for the past two days. It only does this between 42-45mph, which is where it usually shifts into overdrive. I changed the fluid and filter and adjusted the bands just a thousand or two miles ago. I leave it in overdrive all the time except when pulling the trailer up hills.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem or know what the problem could be? Thanks.

I would drive with overdrive off anything under 50mph. Not just when pulling but all the time. Even with my 4. 10 ratio I leave overdrive off until I hit 55 or 60mph. Just asking for trouble to be in overdrive with the RPM's so low at that speed.

Is it going in and out of lockup or overdrive?

My guess is it is lockup... My 98. 5 did the same thing, and TSB 18-02-99 fixed it right up. :D

If it is going in and out of OD, you have more serious issure with the trans...

This past fall I had the same problem with my truck, same set-up as yours. I've had all the re-flashes and transmission adjustments done. Just for the h*ll of it I unhooked both batteries and left it that way overnite. 7 months later, no problems. Worth a try for the price.

It really does sound like a TC lockup problem. I have only had my '99 for a couple months and it had the same problem. The TSB fixed it right up. Also tried the unhooking the batteries to reset but that didn't help.

Thanks!

Thanks to all of you who replied to my post. At first blush, disconnecting the battery cables overnight seems to have cured the problem. I was out zooming around the streets of Great Falls at 630 AM trying it out. I don't understand it, but, I guess whatever works... !
