Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Overdrive disk swap?

On the questions, both on 47re transmission.



#1 Does the overdrive on a 4 x 4 have same disks as a 4 x 2 overdrive?



#2 Is it just a matter of lifting the one set out and putting them back in the same way?



The reason I'm asking is I have a brand new tran from a 4 x 4 that I'm putting in my 4 x 2. I wanted to update the overdrive. The guy at the shop doesn't know if it is possible. He said he could rebuild my old one. If you know I would like advise. Thanks

Maybe - for the second question.

There are clearances that need to be checked and adjusted, if needed, and for that reason, I would recommend someone with automatic experience to do it, or at least oversee it to make sure its right. I think the clearances are adjusted using variable thickness snap rings, on this clutch pack.

I'm having trouble getting the over drive on the new transmission.



Is the 2 wheel drive transmission the same as the 4 wheel drive?

I wonder if the shaft is the same length?

The output shaft is different between a 2x4 and 4x4 as well as the extension housing. The 2x4 has a longer shaft/housing in it. If my memory is still serving me well, I believe all other parts are the same.



I may have miss-read your message.

I thought you were changing the OD clutch disks/plates from one transmission to another one, not changing the entire OD unit (extension housing and all) from one transmission to another.



If so, you need to dissemble the entire transmission to change over the output shaft.

Although the output shafts are different the intermediate shaft sticking out of the main transmssion case are the same as well as all the overdrive components except the OD housing and output shaft.

It should bolt right on, it can be tight going on the splines though.

BudW I have a 2 x 4 and bought a rebuilt 47re from 99 4 x 4.

I wanted to use the rebuilt overdrive parts in my 2 x 4 OD.



The shop was saying they can't get my OD to fit on 4 x 4 tran that i'm putting in my truck. (that was last night)

I got a call this morning,now a different guy said the gears in side the 4 x 2 OD turned. So it will fit.

The shaft is the same.

There is a special service tool to use when re-assemling the overdrive unit. The over drive clutch is spring loaded, there are splines that must be aligned to allow the overdrive unit to slide onto the intermediate shaft. The special too looks like an amputated intermediate shaft. It is in place while the clutch pack is compressed to allow snap ring installation.

Before I couldn't tell when the tran would shift. Don't have that problem anymore.
