Sometimes this o/d gets me a little worked up. It shifts in when it feels like it and it jumps out when it feels like it. the speedo jumps around like it can't make up it's mind. It has done this in the past. I took a tip from you guys about cleaning the trans plugs. That worked the first time but the second time it didn't help much. Usually it just starts working like it should, but this time it seems a little worse. I have heard of this TPS, is it located on the top of the pump. thanks for your help.

TPS

Troutdog,

It sounds like the same thing my truck was doing a while back. My solution was a new throttle position sensor. If you get one, go to Cummins as they are $100 less than Chrysler. I think mine was $134 plus shipping. If you have a manual, it tells how the check the voltage on the TPS. It would be good to check it before you replace it to make sure that is the problem. E-mail me and I will reply with a picture and instructions on how to check your TPS. Hope this helps.

Sounds to me more like the speed/distance sensor on the back of the transmission/transfer case. If the speedo is jumping around the TPS has absolutly nothing to do with that... but the speed/distance sensor will affect both OD shift and speedo.

I had simular problems for awhile. cleaned the TPS and adjusted the voltage, still didn't shift very good. Speedometer was good, didn't jump around.

I changed the speed sensor on the transmission and the shifts have been rock soild for over 6 mths. now. Speed senser is something like $60. 00. TPS = $200. 00 + at stealer.

Good luck

Jim

I have replaced both on my mine, what you desrcibe does sound like the speed sensor, its a very easy fix both of them. I would check the speed sensor 1st, because as I recall it was less expensive as well. I can't believe the stealer gets what they do for those, like the others said, I would give Cummins a call first. Good luck to you too.

I think I will check the speed sensor. I didn't know the plug on the back of the transmission had anything to do with the shift into overdrive. But I do know that when the speedo doesn't jump around it shifts into o/d. But when I go down the road and the speedo starts to act up, it doesn't take long before it goes out of o/d. Its not very nice when your cruising along at highway speeds. Like someone put the brakes on. Thanks again.
