Within the last week I came across a warning in one of my (many) manuals (don't ask me which one!) concerning overfilling of the differential(s) & was just wondering why the same warning wouldn't apply to the manual transmission. Warning specifically stated that overfilling of the differential(s) could cause overheating & foaming.

TIA.

Your rear differential is smaller in capacity & the ring gear flings lube all over the place. On the transmission it is larger so it just helps the lube climb up to the main shaft easier. Just make sure you don't put gear lube in the Getrag.

Sorry to hijack/expand this post, but I'm interested in the "overfilling" of the differential? How much is too much? What can happen? No lockers, open-type gears, auto transmission.

Thanks,

Andrew

I would take note of this warning, if you want to increase the amount of lube in the rear-end I would use a mag dif cover. I believe it increases the amount of fluid without overfilling.

manual says 7 pints, level to be betwen 1/2" and 1" below the drain plug threads, owners manual says 1/4" belowh
