The part # is actually stamped on the valve. Gotta pull it out & hit it with a wire wheel. The # Joe G. says sounds familiar. Also, if you have any fuel system issues, Joe is the guy to consult. He's helped me out a few times. Mike

Hi joe. What is the results of this failure. Also, I developed recently, and it has happened on 2 occasions, that my engine has flat out died about two blocks from my home in the morning with engine cold. I did NOT crank it for fear I was out of fuel and the gauge was reading wrong. The first time I had 12 gallons of fuel in the tank and primed the fuel system at the lift pump (after putting in more fuel bringing the total to 17 gallons) and it started immediately without a hitch. The second time was a week later with a full tank, so I pulled over and tried to start it briefly and it just wanted to stumble and run rough and die so I primed the pump and it started immediately and ran fine yet again. What do you think? Air getting in the system thru a line etc after sitting overnight??? Hmmmm. . My mileage does suck and I do have a TST plate and elbow as the ONLY mods to this '97 5. 9L w/ AT. Thanks! Eric

Also I will note that I have NO problem starting the truck AT ALL. It starts immediately without more than a simple short bump of the key and idles smooth(for a diesel).

A bad overflow valve causes low fuel pressure. That will usually cause intermittant hard starting. When my overflow valve failed my fuel pressure got down to 6 PSI before I got home. The engine still ran ok, but it would not start again when I turned it off. You may have a slight air leak. They always get worse. Email me at -- email address removed -- for my write up on the 12 valve fuel supply system, how it works and how to fix it.

Joe, one more question. Is it normal to hear an air "squishing" sound at the Inj pump when priming the fuel system at the lift pump manually? is this the air being sent back through the return line??Thanks, Eric

Thats the valve bouncing off the valve set when it reaches the regulated pressure .
Its a simple non exact test to see if the LP or OFV is working .

Joe, I have a question about the overflow valve. I just put a fuel press. gauge in my truck last week. When I cranked it up it went to 17 psi at idle and drops to 11-12 running down the road 55-60 mph. This weekend I changed the fuel filter, cleaned screen on fuel pump and adj. the fuel shutoff valve. Started it up and the fuel press. went up to 22 at idle and 15-16 at 55-60 mph. Got in my truck Sunday morning and started it up and it went back to 16 at idle and 12 psi at 55-60 mph. Is the problem a bad overflow valve or fuel pump? Fuel press. at 2500 rpm is 18-19 no load.

Thanks

Lefty Lucas

PS- Joe could you send me your write-up on the 12V fuel sys. when you have time. -- email address removed --

Thanks Again

On the way.

Could be the overflow valve. How to test for that is described in the write up. I suspect that it may be something else because the lift pump is mechanical. That means the faster the engine turns the more it pumps. When I'm running down the road I have more fuel pressure than I do at idle because of the increased fuel flow. My idle is close to or above 30 PSI. On the road it's at least 38 PSI and is over 40 PSI a lot. You should have thrown the fuel heater away when you cleaned the pre-filter screen.

Lift Pump and fuel pressure

Do you have any hard ticking coming from the left side of the engine BLOCK that sounds like a lifter "tick" in a gas engine?? Some people think it's just a typical diesel sound that absolutely is not. It is VERY apparent if you put your head in the left hand wheel opening and not as much so if you listen elsewhere. You could have a fuel lift (transfer) pump going out. They are about $82 at a cummins dealer. Get the rubber elbow hose at the same time that goes between the transfer pump and the pre-filter housing too. Oh, and make sure the gaskets(2) that go between the block to spacer to lift pump are in the box or order them seperately and any other seal rings that I can't remember about. Eric

If you look on the valve you will find the Bosch p/n. It can be purchased for a lot less from the local Bosch dealer. Shadrach

Don't buy Bosch inj. pump parts from a cummins dealer!

The reason that the Bosch inj. pump parts are sooooo expensive at the Cummins dealer is that they pay the same price for the parts from Bosch that we do and then have to mark them up accordingly. It seems that the relationship between Bosch and Cummins is an odd one according to the dealer and Bosch doesn't care. If you need Bosch parts then go to Bosch or another 3rd party such as TST etc. . A little research here will give you various sources.

I just got one from Precision Diesel Injection & Turbo. It looks like the original. $58 includes shipping and the two gaskets. 517-694-1522
