Anyone have a picture of a overflow valve? Also where is it located?

I posted about a flutter when reving in "N" and someone said it was caused by the overflow valve not working. Need to fix it I guess.

thanks Jeff

Its on the injector pump front banjo bolt. Where the steel fuel return line mounts to the top front banjo bolt. Remove that Banjo bolt. The banjo has a bolt on the top of it. Takes a 12mm wrench to remove (I believe) Ballbearing and spring inside(overflow valve )Spring length 1/2"+ . 05 spring lenght very sensitive to fuel pressure. Genos carrys fuel pressure gages. (A must have)

Wish someone carryed a pre drilled/tapped fuel pump pressure banjo bolt

my old 98 had the same flutter you were talking about. i replaced the overflow valve, she barked right up. i left it in park and stomped the pedal to the floor and still had the flutter. it had 185k on the odometer. with the miles on that truck, i was thinking like maybe injectors, or slipped timing. dunno, traded her off on one identical except lower miles and 5 speed.

370 injectors can do that from what I have read if they are not matched properly. I have a very slight flutter at low RPM and light throttle. Any other conditions it runs smooth. I bought mine from PDR because I heard that they take the trouble to match the injectors as best as possible.

The job of the overflow value is to maintain the proper fuel pressure in the injection pump. My new one from TST Products has about 30 PSI at idle and over 40 (gauge pegged) most of the time on the road. When the old overflow valve failed it had only 6 PSI by the time I got home. It was still running smooth.

so, is the TST overflow valve the exact same part as the replacement bosch, or does it flow a higher pressure? If it flows a higher pressure, is that an advantage?

It appears to be the same part. I don't think the extra pressure is really an advantage. Might be with a competition truck. When my old overflow valve failed the truck was running fine down to 6 PSI. I tried to start it when I got home just to see if it would. It didn't.

My truck wont run with the ball and spring in the valve.

everytime i install the ball and spring the truck will run for a bit then it dies.

I kept burning up electric lift pumps untill i installed a FASS,and the reason it didnt burn up the FASS is because it has its own return.

Any ideas???

Michael

I thought the overflow valve wearing out was a comman cause of poor fuel mileage. Is that correct? Would a higher flow hurt or help fuel mileage? I'm seeing really low mileage compared to what I used to get and was going to replace the valve but now I'm not sure which to get. Haha.

Also, how do you test the pressure from that valve? Is that the reading you get on a fuel pressure gauge in the cab? Thanks! -Josh

Where can you buy this bosch part? Have looked around but get no results at any bosch part place I've tried. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tom

Timebomb,

You mentioned updated overflow valve, anything different from the original?

... Im not sure about the spring inside but I know the dia. of the hole is smaller to reduce the amount of fuel that flows through.

"I don't think the extra pressure is really an advantage. Might be with a competition truck. "

... The extra pressure will aid in filling the barrels and plungers in the short time that it has to do it. So it is a good upgrade if you have a bad OV. Would I spend $70 on one just to replace a good stock one on a daily driver... No, On a higher RPM pump the fill time is critical as there is less time to fill the B&P's, so you need fuel pressure.

when i got my truck i picked it up about a hour north of houston and drove it home to baton rouge with a OF valve that i found out later had no ball or spring inside (running all of the fuel back to the tank), ran ok (at the time, little did i know how much power i was down) was a pain to cold start unless you primed it first, and the lift pump was about half dead putting out 10-15 max under light throttle no load after i built a OF valve from parts in my mercedes injection pump pile at the shop, 15k miles later and a new lift pump it idles at 20 and jumps to 30 on a rev and holds about 25 under a good load with my home brewed OF valve check ball and spring

for guys with weak springs, people are shimming inside the regular spring with a spring from a bic pen cut to length. on a good OF valve it raises pressure about 15 PSI. May help guys with ones that are shot and not able to order one at this time.

I would be interested in trying one in my outfit. Any websites or place to go to order one. Whats the List price on these things ?, and I guess these aren`t available at NAPA.

Does the ID threads enable me to add a pressure fixed right on the Hex Head ?

I got my last OFV from Marty. It's a 1 piece, the one that has the ball pressed into it. It works good. He raised his price $5.

It's an OEM BOSCH p/n 1 417 413 047 000

Precision Diesel Injection and Turbo Inc.

Marty Tompkins

888-734-7349

$40 + $7 shipping and handling.

Last OFV I got from marty was something other then bosch. Had a problem with it and replaced it with an OEM $10 more from TST no problems since...
