Hi all

Can I add the garage door opener feature to my overhead console in my 05? Is it as simple as plug it in to existing wiring or would I need more than the buttons?

Jerry

I believe it would be a difficult task to do. If the wiring is not there, it won't be a walk in the park.

I have the HomeLink on my truck, which came with the Laramie "H" package. It's worked great from day one. It's good for three garage doors and I have two garage doors on my garage and one on my barn. I'm happy with it.

I have had the headliner and all overhead parts out while installing a roof mounted DVD player and can tell you that on an '06 SLT without the Homelink option that there are not any spare wires or connectors up there. Not one. :{

I took a slightly different approach.

I dismantled the keyfob sized remote that came with my garage opener and installed it inside the overhead console. I used a small push button switch on the front edge of the console and wired the 12 volt power source to a hot wire inside.

I didn't take pictures of it at the time and this one isn't very good but shows the push button. It's been working fine since day one.

I've tried several times to program the garage door that came with the "H" package but no go. I gave up and handed it over to my 20 year old son who is a lot better than me when it comes to programing things. He too came to a conclusion that it does not work. What is the trick to programing the OEM remote?

I have one built in but could not get it to work at all.

My built in Homelink unit not only opens the garage door (1st button), it opens my electric entrance gate (2nd button). My wife's Honda has a similar Homelink system and it works as advertised. I followed the instructions in both vehicle Owner's Manuals and it worked the first time setting up both the garage door and the gate. I plan to have a remote control for my shop door which will utilize the third button. :)

Why?

My door opener work's just fine in my Dodge and I didn't even insatll one. I pull up to the gate / door and look at the wife (dont even have to say a thing) she get's out and opens it up. Her's will do the same when she drives but she has to say some ugly things for me to get out and open it up :-laf

MAN... You got STONES!!!:p

Read the manual in detail, my 2010 has this feature. It seems some of the newer door openers have a type of "linking or learning" mode that allows you to match it to a built in door opener in a rig. I had to actually go up to the door opener, find the hidden little button and press it which put it in "linking" mode for a few mins, then had to go to the pickup and put it in a search mode so the two would find eachother and from then on they have worked well. Before doing that it did not work on the newer door, but the older doors are easy as there was nothing to do but put the pickup in search mode.

Some garage door openers have a revolving code, which means that the code changes each time the opener is used. That's a feature that my garage door openers have. That type of door opener are a little more difficult to learn, however the instructions cover that type. Read the instructions carefully. You might have someone help you to press the learn button on the door opener while you press the HomeLink in the truck. You could also have that person read the instructions to make sure that you didn't miss something.

Hope this helps, george

I have the same kind of gate opener. Works great! A little slow occasionally, but it beats getting out in the rain.

You guys cracks me up. I had to point this thread to my wife who after reading it gave me that "try it" look.

Man I've read that manual till my eyes turned blue. I do have an MBA degree therefore I can understand simple written instructions (emphasis on the simple). :-laf I even had my wife who is a lot smarter than me read the instruction and no go. I believe that this gizmo on my overhead just don't like me so I gave up and use my regular remote clipped on the sun visor.

#1

This is what I had to do with the openers for our new home. Its easy to do. If I member right,I hit the hidden button on the motor and at the same time my wife hit the button #1 for my side of the garage. Did the same thing for her side of the garage. Had to do the same thing for her Subaru. All new garage openers have the roaming code thing now.

I took the overhead console down, unplugged the wires for the compass/tripmeter, took that black unit out and put one in I got from a Ram 1500 Laramie and plugged it back in. Everything works great, fuel milage is on, compass/temp is correct and now i have the homelink system and have 2 garage doors programmed into it. it can be done in about 10-15 minutes once you the the module.
