2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission overhead console revisited

In my 99 I have the console that many have had problems with, ie. no odo reading but ave mileage computes and all else is ok. Does anyone know if the 2001 and 2002 console will work on the 99 as the later console has the inst mpg feature and they don't seem to fail.
