The overhead console temp and compass module on my '96 seems to have died. I followed the diagnostic guide in the service manual and it says the module is shot. Checking on a couple of websites for a replacement I almost fainted when I saw the price ran from $387 to $440!! Has anyone else replaced their module and found a better price? For that price I'll stick my hand out the window to get a feel for the temp! :)
 
Thanks for the reply and link. They appear to have about everything but the console module was not in their inventory it said. Looks like a good resource for about anything else however :)
 
That part # has gone belly up. To order a new one you have to go to a lil plac e in Snowflake AZ they are asking about $600 now :eek:
 
:eek: That is beyond what it's worth to me but I appreciate the information. I could see around $100+ but what they seem to ask is ridiculous. Time for the roll the window down to check the temp! :)
 
SRehberg, I feel your pain. The 95 and 98 are both sans temp/compass. The 95 did come back and work for about 6 months on it's own. But it's out again.



I see a basement business opportunity here. Really, what are the odds it's a $2. 00 part that's failing. I'd be glad to pay someone to fix ours.

What is the part number on your unit? Is it the same as a 98. 5?
 
There are actually two part numbers, one for Jeep and the other for "truck".



The Jeep one is: 5266173 $434



The truck is: 56007036 $387. 16!



Go figure for the difference in price but stamped on the same module!



I agree that it's probably some $2 part that has quit. Ours was intermitent for awhile then went feet up so there we sit. Is it the same as your '98?

Looks like some similar numbers on my garage resident pieces/parts. :)

I wish I could verify if it is still working. I don't have a pin-out for the plug or I would bench test it.

Pin 1 is coutrsey lamp driver.

Pin 2 is B+

Pin 3 is ground.



Large plug is,

Pin 1 is fused switched 12volts

Pin 2 is ccd bus+

Pin 3 is temp input

Pin 4 is ground

Pin 5 is fused B+

Pin 6 is courtesy lamps

Pin 7 is ground

Pin 8 is CCD-

Pin 9 is sensor ground

Pin 10 isnothing

Pin 11 is vtss indicator driver. ??? MPG?

Gee, the little woman asked me what I was holding and I told her it was the overhead display from "Blueberry", our old 98. 5 2500 CTD, and was trying to figure the electrical pin-out in order to bench test it but I didn't have the wiring diagrams for the 98 and I was sooo confused:confused: and would have to trace the circuit card to find the power circuits. She said "You mean that big box in the bedroom closet on the top shelf?"Oo. Wow, one complete, new set of FSMs, including owner's manual and tech service bulletins. I thought the new owner got them. For the past 37+ years that woman has never ceased to amaze me.

Here is the pin-out for the overhead console plug (harness end) on a 98 (key is over pin 13):

Broke out the 02 FSM and the plug and wiring are different from the 98. Looks like the 01 and 02 are the oddballs.

Now to find the dual power supply...
 
The cheapest I found the module was $387 through MoparOnlineParts.com... I still didn't need it that much! :)

Just wondering, has anyone tried to have one of these repaired? I'd wager there's a common item or two failing. Someone with the necessary electronic ability could fix a couple (that we send em) and then get some kind of exchange going. I'd pay a hundred bucks for a fresh unit in a heartbeat.



If I had any contacts with the necessary ability I'd be checking on this possibility. Hopefully someone else can call in a favor here.
