Overhead Storage

I'm planning some BOMBs for my recently-purchased '95 and was wondering if anyone has bought or made shelf units to fit on either side of the overhead console.



I would like to have one which would be mounted securely enough to take the weight of a CB, a dozen or so CDs and a few relatively lightweight items (sunglasses, garage door remote, etc. ). A flip-up door (latchable up and down) to hide contents and keep them from falling would be a big plus! It would be nice if the design fit the overall appearance of cab interior too -- but not necessary.

I looked at some of these units on the web and discovered that they hang down to much and obscure your view, I am 6-2 and need all the headroom that I can get so I backed out, there is a thread called overhead storage in the product review, do a search if still interested.

I have one of the "shelf it's". I think you can get them from Cabela's, JC Whitney, etc. I used it for a year or two. It's very strong, but it does obscure your vision (well not mine, I'm a whopping 5'6" but everyone else that got in my truck said it was in the way. The one I have mounts to the visor mounts and then the visors attach to the shelf. I'll give you mine if you want to pick it up. It's grey.

I have to agree with BWilson, Im of the "SHORT" stature so it doesnt bother me at all. And I like it, It holds the weight of my Galaxy 99 great. It makes things very convient for me concidering I have a reg. cab. But just my $. 02

I have a Steelhorse overhead console in my F-250. When I installed it, I didn't put the visors back on. I'm 6'6" and really isn't a problem. Not sure how much it will hang down in the Dodge. Had my C. B. hanging from it.

I bought a Shelfit. The quality was lousy and it was a bear to fit. Then when I put the sun visors back on my head hit the thing. I got my money back. POS.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm about 5'9" so MAYBE the "shelf-it" would work for me although it sounds like the "Steelhorse" might be better -- if I can find a source.



Joe, can you tell me, specifically, what were the problems you experienced with the Shelf-It?

The first tip off was the screw holes didn't line up. Some of the edges were not deburred. Just generally poor quality. Then when I managed to get it attached, the visors didn't work. I could not rotate them to the side window. Even with the seat all the way down I had a hard time seeing where I was going. They may work ok with an earlier model truck with a steeper windshield. These windshields slope back too far.
