Anyone know if you can put in one of the DC over head trip computers as an "aftermarket" type accessory. My truck is an 2500 SLT with just about evey option except leather and the travel computer. I would like the computer as I am pretty obsessed with mileage and I think it has a miles to empty mode.

Does anyone know if the stock wiring would be there? It was for my mirrors when I put in powervision's. Has anyone done this as an "after market" assecory. How much was the comuter?

For those with the computer from the factory would it be worth the time and money to install?

Thanks in advance

I can not answer your question. But I can tell you that some of the more upscale gps units will also figure milage. besides that it is a reliable speedometer, map that moves with you, they even tell you when you miss your turn. I run a less expensive one. $500 new, but I got one that was "refurbished" for $200.

I really like it. Will try to post a pic tomorow.

Browse the Cummins web page - I think the overhead would be more expensive to install than some of the engine data modules that tap into the diagnostic plugs that already exist under the dash. At least one has a fuel consumption output. Even if it doesn't give mpg directly, it would allow you to monitor driving styles and maximize your mpg; also, they give other good data that is of interest to folks like us.

Seems I heard the trip computer is $800 plus you need two wiring harnesses. You could buy a GPS that will do more for half the price. After engine modifications the mpg readout on the stock computer is worthless.

Road Relay

A Road Relay from Cummins will do all that real time + much more. If you had a Road Relay the only gauges you might need are pyrometer and fuel press. I think there was a write up in the back of issue 37 (Aug Sept Oct '02). Check it out, it's a pretty cool box. Then again so's the GPS.

My advice is free, that's all it's worth :D
