I was at a wrecking yard looking for some other parts and I noticed a few truck still had the overhead computers in them. I asked the owner about them and he told me that they had sold a few and they were supposed to wire right in to trucks that didn't have them. Anyone have any experience/advice on this conversion? :D

I am thinking of doing the same...

The only response I have ever gotten is that "the fuel mileage is not correct on them" I and thousands of others know this!! I and perhaps you, just want another gadget!

i bought one and a harness off ebay a while back. I willl tell ya, it will light up, but the plug that routs it into the bus system (where it gets all the electronic info) is not there if your truck does not have a factory console. I am still trying to figure out a way to route it into the system, however it looks like it will take some time to do. if anyone finds a wire or a plug that will work, please let me know.

Kevin

Hopefully there is a fairly easy (inexpensive) way to tap into the system... . I will stay tuned to see what you find out... ... .....

I did my 01. 5 back in november of 02'. No problems to date, if you are bombed the mpg function is not accurate, but still works.

Basically,

You will need the internal harness for the trip computer, unless your's came with one.

You will need a temperature sensor, mounts on the grill.

You will need a temp sensor jumber wire, goes from light under hood to temp sensor.

You will need the harness that goes from the trip comp to the fuse box, it also connects to the wire harness under dash.

Temp Sensor Jumper wire #5602199AB $21. 60

fuse box to console harness #56045921AC $57. 45

internal console wiring #50130608AA $32. 85

Temp Sensor #4688204 $16. 10

11/02 prices (dealer)

I have both upper and lower harnesses from an 01 3500. I will need to order the tem sensor and harness. My problem consists of not having the small plug that comes off the large white covered block under the dash. I cannot connect into the computer system of my truck without that connection. Can you give pics of what you did where under the dash please. I am confused. if i can find where that will plug in i am set.

Sure, I'll try and remember, remember remember, what was I going to try and remember? I don't remember.

This photo shows the location of the White cover under the dash.

This photo shows the location of the white plug under dash on the drivers side of the white cover.

If you have the proper wiring harness from the Trip Comp, you will have two plugs, one for the fuse box (PITA) and one for the connector shown above. This connector should be white and fastened to the bulk head connector with the white cover.

Ask Away!

i have not been able to find the white plug in my truck. Did your truck have any kind of console from the factory. I hope i am just overlooking it. I want the temp and compass stuff, the mileage would be nice but it is inacurate so i am not all that concerned with it. Hopefully i can figure this out with your guys help

I don't know why the white plug is not there? I would think that all trucks come with the same main harness. You might want to look at other 02's and see if they have the plug.

Anyone with an 02' that has a trip computer: Do you have the plug we are talking about?

i am still searching for the plug, can you tell me where the wires to the plug go, i may be able to wire it in myself if i can find the location of the port i need to tap into, i may have to try and find something else that works off the bus system and tap into it. I feel it is perfectly possible, just labor intensive

I found the plugs in my 2000. It will probably be sometime after Christmas/New Year's before I get around to doing it... ... ... ... .

i am still searchin in my 02, no luck yet, would someone be so kind as to trace that plug back to the source and tell me where it plugs in at. If i can get that far the rest is simple enough for me to wire in.

Kevin

Kissfan113,

Don't understand why you would not have the plugs.

Do you have the full maintenance manual?

I have one on CD, somewhere, when and if I find it I will try to find the appropriate wiring diagram. To actually follow the wires would be a time consuming and almost impossible task. Wire bundles etc.
