Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Overheat

99 with Gauges. Pulling trailer with 4 wheeler up steep grade approx 2 miles dirt road. EG at about 800 Trans pegged at 250 and engine just shy of over heat on dash gauge. No fan noise. Truck has 30000miles. What's up. Do I need to upgrade fan, if so what to do? Help.

It sounds like your fan is not working. More than likely the fan clutch went south. The cooling system rarely ever gets overloaded so I believe low speeds with no fan is your problem. Trans would get hot also with no cooling. I would change the trans fluid as soon as possible because it got way too hot. Is the sending unit in the pan or the line leaving the torque converter? Hopefully it is located in the tc line. Your EGT's were ok even if it was post turbo. I wouldn't want to go any higher on the EGT's if it were post turbo for any extended periods of time. u arent loosing antifreeze r u? mine did the same thing when my headgasket was on its way out. jsut a thought. or thermostat stuck, might change that out.

I'm having the same problem. I've replaced the tstat, flushed the system and replaced the fan clutch. No luck. I still do not hear the fan lock up when it heats up. Maybe I got a bum replacement.

If that 99 still has the stock t-stat strart there. [there was a lot of bad ones including mine]. The bad t-stat will not run enough water through the rad to convice the fan clutch to engage untill real hot.

Check the bottom hose for flow. It can be sucking shut inside but the outside will look fine. The inside lining comes loose. It should be as hot as the top hose if the temp is close to overheating.
