overheated

My 1990 is overheating when pulling a load. I changed the thermostat with one from cummins. Help I would hate to have to start using my powerstroke.

Radiator need a rodding out perhaps, water pump impeller chewed up?

Just the usual questions, 50/50 water / antifreeze?, was there a lot of buildup or rust inside the thermostat housing. Hard water deposits = check radiator, Rust, there are some cooling system flushes out there that help eat a little of that out.

Mine was overheating when loaded just before I finally blew the HG. But then again, mine had been stuck and scored in 4 cylinders by PO. :-{}

I guess a big question would be Is this different from the past or is this a new to you truck?

I've had the truck for two years, it's always ran a little hot in the summer and when pulling a load. Then in the winter it wont warm up enough to keep the windshield from freezing up.

You changed the thermostat with no effect? I'd start looking at the radiator and replace the hoses if they feel too mushy or too hard.

You may also have to upgrade to a cross flow radiator from the intercooled trucks. T-stat housing is $70 or so new from Cummins; they are on ebay all the time, too (except when I need one). Any 12 valve housing will work. The stock radiators in the older ones are pitifully small.

Are you sure its overheating, reason why I ask, my stock guage shows my truck is always hot, but my auto meter water temp guage reads solid 180.
