Has anybody seen this problem? When towing my 10,000 lb boat last summer through the desert (115 degrees temperature shown on overhead console)-coolant temperature shows a needle width above 190 on the gauge. Started up the a pretty steep hill (Chiraco summit east of Indio on I-10) I can usually get up these hills at about 35mph. I started the down shift routine from 55 to 35 mph- after a few minutes the fuel pressure went to ZERO (yikes!)-the engine is still running. I pulled off to the side of the road and stopped. I recycled the power like you would to turn the transfer pump on to purge air from the system. The engine starts up fine and fuel pressure is normal. It did it 3 or 4 times more going up the hill. I could only manage 20 mph on the shoulder without it shutting off.

I got back to town and took it in to a Desert Diesel here in Tucson. He said the codes that showed up were 0217 for overheating even though the gauge did not indicate overheating. They did not find any other problems. Desert Diesel suggested the combination of high ambient temperature and sharp increase in load due to the hill caused a spike in water temperature which caused the ECM to go to a shut down mode to save the engine. Their only other suggestion was to replace the fan clutch which I did. I also replaced the coolant temperature sensor, thermostat and radiator cap. I don’t know if any of these things work till I try it again this summer.

Has anybody else had similar problems. Any suggestions for a fix.

2001 24v-HO with 6 speed manual.

Thanks,

Charlie N

The ecm will derate for many reasons. The logic is to save the engine from self destruction.

The most likely reasons for a 24v to overheat are,t/stat not opening completely, oil and dirt coating the radiator, then fan clutch. The t/stat # you should try is 5015708ac.
