2003 Dodge 3500, 155,000 miles, Automatic, twin turbo, Edge 70 hp box, 70 horse injectors, Banks intake, BD Manifold, Fire ringed head. Water pump replace, Radiator Replaced, Thermostat Replaced, Clutch Fan replaced this weekend. Truck runs about 190 not towing. When towing temp gauge keeps climbing when I've got my foot into it. If I don't let out of it, keeps climbing all the way up to the red line. The problem started about the time we fire ringed the head. I am at a loss. I am wondering if somehow the head gasket somehow might be the wrong one blocking off some water port or maybe has a hole open that shouldn't be, letting the water recirculate through the head.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

I know you said you have a new t-stat, but have you thought about trying a new one to see if it helps. I would hate to tear into this full bore to find out you had a bad t-stat.

I've replace the t-stat twice. My first suspicion was an aftermarket t-stat so I changed it out to one directly from Cummins. Good thought though.

Radiator was replace about 30 days ago. So unless I got a bad new one I am considering that possibility eliminated. Thanks for the input though.

Yes, plugged two different OBD2 readers into it and the gauge is maybe 2-3 degrees higher. It has me totally bum fuzzled. I am leaning towards an issue with fire ringing the head. I have just about ruled everything else out. My next step is to pull the air conditioning condenser to make sure it is not restricting the air flow. After that it's off with it's head. I've looked into methanol injection and a Mishimoto Aluminum Performance Radiator. But that is about a $1,600 buck gamble that I would prefer to avoid if I can find someone else that has already fought this battle. Thanks for your input.

The OBD readers use the temp sensor just as the gauge does. Try using an infrared heat gun on the cyl head at the thermostat to verify that the temp sensor is correct.

Good point. I'll check it out but it gets hot enough to blow it out the overflow so I am pretty sure the temp sensor it working. Thanks for the idea.

if you are talking about a water meth kit it wont help coolent temp. as a matter of fact it raises my coolant temp while lowering egt. my engine is actually working harder by staying in the power band longer because the kit drops the egts instead of forcing me to down shift. i keep a eye on the coolant temp while pulling long grades while towing heavy.

Aaron, Good to know. I wouldn't have guessed that. Great thing about this board is, there is usually someone who has already gone down the road you are looking at, and can tell you what to expect. Thanks for the info.
