Overloads

Wondering what is the best in your opinion. We will be towing a 28ft 14gvw gooseneck. We are wanting to put overload springs on the truck. Thinking Timbrens or air bags. I know there are ups and downs to both. Is there any reason absolutely not to go with one or the other.

We are open to suggestions.

I installed a set of Firestone airbags and they work great. I have 2500 lbs of hitch weight, and they work fine. when I'm empty I let them down to 5PSI and it rides normal.

I like overloads best because they will not effect the ride until you have enough weight in the bed and air bags sometime leak air and you may wind up with too much air in one or not enough air in one or both.

Im thinking about doing a leaf over ride on my 2500... But Im not sure which way to go. . if the overload from a 3500 truck is effective, or if I should just go with an aftermarket overload. . any ideas?

I had air bags and fought leaks and finally sold that truck. When I bought my '03 I didn't want to fight the leaks again so I went with Timbrens. Their great. They still have a stock ride and when I hook up my 11000 lb 5er I don't have to air anything up or worry about it leaking... ... ... ... . JIM

Air bags give you a phony bouncy feeling when you are towing. Go with overloads.

Airbags drastically improved my ride while towing. . I haven't had a single problem with the bags since I installed them. Depending on the load I can level the truck out as much or as little as I choose. If I had to do it over again I would get airbags. To me nothing is worse then seeing a truck lower in the back then in the front. Well there are probably worse things.

Agreed. Especially with on-board compressor and controls.

I better do something soon, was looking around under the truck, looking at the job the hitch guys did, and noticed the exhaust had actually touched the top of the rearend housing. There is usually around 6 or more inches of clearance there.

I have the Timbrens and would probable get them again. They leave about an inch of clearance between the axle and the rubber spring when unloaded. my biggest compaint is the lack of progressivety. I bought the part number recommend for the 03 and up and it was very stiff. I looked at the Timbren web site and selected a softer spring Which Timbren sent N/C. The spring I select was the 02 and down spring. Still, with a pin weight of 2500 to 3000 lbs the truck can NOT sag enought to touch the the standard overloads. Once you engage the rubber springs, they are your suspension.
