LOL Gary, do you have to disconnect the 5er and leave it at the KOA when you fuel up - wouldn't want to take more than a truck's worth of space at the pump.

WADDA YA MEAN - "Take up more than a truck's worth of space"?

I *pay* for that space by being a "good customer", and being considerate of other consumers by using the truck pumps instead of the auto island... :p :D

Glad to see someone has a sense of humor here - I've tried to keep my comments directed at a PRACTICE instead of individuals - my opinion carries no more weight than anyone else's - and at this point. *I* consider all this to be sorta funny...

Too bad a few take it all so seriously and personally - and along those lines, I want to thank Steve for his patience - and express my TOTAL understanding and support if he chooses to lock down this thread OR in any way edit or eliminate any of my specific posts...

We may disagree on this subject, but this is STILL the best group on the Internet!;)

I love you all - even the Walmart campers!;)

Other bums...

Gary - You know another thing that really chaffs me? When people drink out of water fountains. These dirtbags are just too cheap to purchase a perfectly drinkable 20 oz. bottle of water for a measley $1. 99? These public water abusers should be STOPPED! I'm sure Gary will back me! :p

The campground drop for fuel was a great idea for you Gary. When you run low on fuel, find & drive to a KOA. Pay of course, you wouldn't want to be a bum. Unhook, drive to the fuel station, refuel, come back hook-up, and hit the road. If you take your trailer through the fuel station, you're basically bumming space that other customers could use.

Well, shucks ~ since I joined this TDR group, I've kept an eye out in the campgrounds for fellow TDR members - never have seen any... NOW, I know why - other than a relative handful, they all must roost all hunkered down in some parking lot - I guess those "bombs" DO cost $$$ - and ya gotta save up the required loot SOMEHOW! ;) :D

In the campgrounds, we usually discuss the neat places we've stayed in and visited - wadda you "Walmart campers" discuss, where the prettiest neon lights were in yer travels, and whether a Peterbuilt or Kenworth sounds best brushing past yer rig in the middle of the night on a Flying J lot? :p ;) :D

Guess I'll have to keep talking to the Ford and GM drivers in the campgrounds - doesn't look like many Dodge herders are likely to show up... :D :D

Camp careful, now!:D

OH - and to absolutely fair and open about all this - here's a place we stayed in on one of our last trips up along the Oregon coast...

My rig is the one on the right...

Walmart loves me

I've pulled into Walmarts all over the country day & night for tire repairs and other maintenance needs and to pick up camping & food items with my horse trailer and 4 horses. We also use this time to take a break, and at every one we were encouraged by the Service Manger to unload our ponies so they could graze and stretch a mite also.

oh yea they also fertilize those barren areas behind walmart as to allow new grass to grow.

I dint think KOA's are set up for Horsemen but I do call ahead for Horse motels.

are we having fun yet??? This thread is so awesome the original question was very simple in form but this sucker is far from simple anymore. Got to love freedom of speech!!

Gary,

How did you sneak the Dodge into the Ford dealer? Are you going to breakfast on Sunday? I finally got my radio in my truck, now working on the morse code tapes. :p

HI Sheldon - GREAT to here from you again!

No, can't make the breakfast - just a bit to far for me so early in the morning... Good luck with the tapes and all.

Nah - we were on the Ford lot waiting for my RVing buds automatic transmission to be replaced - he wanted to be close by to keep abreast of repairs, and we were their only transportation while they were waiting - so we did the "parking lot" bit with them...

Those parking lots are great for occasional or emergency use - and *I* would sure hate to see them abused to the point we lose them when they really ARE genuinely needed!;) :D

dealer lot?

Gary - I can't believe you camped at a dealer parking lot. You even un-hooked! Wasn't there a campground within a 100 miles of there that you could've camped in? Heck, it would've only been a few measley bucks to hang out in a nearby campground, & then you could've explored all the beautiful sights in the area (like, there could've been a local landfill). And you missed all that beauty while bumming around in the dealer lot. What's that called when you do the same thing that you critisize people for?

- JyRO

Let's make this more interesting

Nah - we were on the Ford lot waiting for my RVing buds automatic transmission to be replaced

Did he go with the ATS or the DTT transmission????

Personally I think the xxx is the better transmission because nnnnnn told me so!!!

AHHHhh - Jyro, Jyro - TOTALLY miss the POINT, doncha!

I never HAVE criticised the occasional, or emergency use of those "free" spots - only the ABUSE of the privilege by those who plan entire trips, and their eventual destination around them - seting up camp, and using those spots as "home base" as they do the tourist bit... That ABUSE presents the possibility that eventually, the privilege will be legislated away or otherwise removed - THEN, *none* of us will have that luxury - as in my own case displayed above when *I* took advantage of it to assist my RVing bud!

Read back thru ALL my posts in this thread - until now, *I* have NOT called ANY by name, or made any personal references or attacks - I direct my criticism at a PRACTICE that I personally disapprove of, which is my right - THEN, those who choose to publicly condemn themselves pop outta the woodwork, and publicly attack ME directly, personally and by name as they attempt to defend their activities...

But Jyro, and a few others, simply don't get it - or else are so determinedly dedicated to free parking as a way of their RVing life that they don't WANT to "get it"...

For those, there is NO hope...

I like to find a small town cemetary. It's usally quiet, empty and free. Parking lots suck as do most campgrounds.

Good idea...

Hey Bighammer - That's a great idea. And the ghost stories you could tell. .

Personally, I think I've stayed in a Walmart parking lot 3 times. The neon light was very romantic. Each time I arrived after midnight and was gone by about 7 AM. I'm such a cheapscate bum. I'm personally attacking myself now. I'll let you know if I wind up with a black eye. ;)

Enough is enough. Both sides of the argument of how ethical it is to utilitize free parking have been made - several times over. Now drop it and let's get back on the original topic of where to park for overnight stops.

WOW! That was an adventure!!! You people better stay out of the sun with all that thin skin:D

I think the jest of the question is overnight stops, not camping. I personally put on the miles one at a time until 7 or 800 have gone by and then find the next spot to pull over. After all, I am on the 'way' to go camp somewhere, I'm not camping, and I'm in a real hurry to get there. I've seen the road before. (28 states, 11 Alaska Trips and 1. 02 Million miles worth over the years!)

Pullouts, gas stations, short roads whatever. Overnight is 9:00PM or later until 6:00 or 7:00 AM. Safety is a locked door and a . 44 :D But its not camping. I'll do that when I get 'there'. I think it's best to just be out of the way and don't make a crowd. Personally I do like KOA's ( $20-$30 (3 to 5 cents per mile travelled)) and the like but while spinning the wheels you don't get to partake of much in the way of ammenities.

And Gary, Take a Flying Leap! ( Bungie Jumping that is, its insane! ) I got an old picture from Anc. Alaska that I gotta find, I thought it was hillarious, 30+ RV's in a store lot! Laundry out, awnings and lawn chairs, and a parking lot sweeper to boot. ( No, I wasn't one of them).
