This is not exactly a diesel topic but does affect some of us, since I have seen some posts recently on this forum regarding CA refusing to register trucks due to non compliant emissions sticker which forces an out of state registration. Others do it to avoid the high sales tax and reg fees.

I just heard on a news broadcast that our state government is setting up a telephone number so that you can turn in your neighbor for being a resident driving a vehicle registered in another state. So lets salute Arnold as they did to a mustachioed fellow in 1933.

MA has had that for years, 1-800- IPAYTAXES sounds like a joke but it is not. I just called it, the recording states it was setup to prevent MA residents from registering vehicles in other states to avoid paying taxes, they want you to leave your name and number. Bordering NH has no sales tax so people are always trying to figure out how to avoid paying MA 5%. There was a heated discussion about this a while back.

Washington State has had that program for YEARS, keeps folks from registering their vehicles in OR, where it's really really cheep:mad:

... and, when I bought mine in NC last September, I paid over $3400 to the State of Washington... 8. 8% sales tax, PLUS a 0. 3% surcharge on sales of new or used vehicles..... believe me, I was tempted... 9. 1% sucks bad... . +, of course, the license fees, tonnage, etc.....
