I have a Black 3500, it's a '97 and I love the color. There are only two types of people that own black vehicles; those that take care of them, and those that do not.
Black vehicles take a little extra effort to keep up. They show dirt very fast, and yes they will reveal every scratch, chip and dent you get. Body shops know how important vehicle prep is on a black truck, they will let everyone know if they took their time and need the job right, black tells no lies.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, their is nothing like a shiny black truck or car. That is where the rewards lie for all the hard work you put in. In the day light they look great, shiny with a contrast of chrome sparkling against it. But at dawn or night, I think they look their best. The black get blacker and the contrast of the running and clearance lights looks way cool.
You have to love them to keep them up, it requires many washings, and a constant eye for detail. If you don't have the time, or Patience I would recommend a lighter color, silver seems to hide alot. there is nothing worse then a black truck that is neglected, it looks bad and on the truck and on the owner. Black also soaks up more then it's fair share of heat, which makes for some very hot inside temps during the sun. Vent Visors are a must, so the window can be left open some for the heat to escape. Also the window Shields are a must have item as well. I am willing to put up with all the extras it takes to own a black truck, To me the beauty is well worth the extra time and expense it takes to keep one clean. I even ordered my 36' Edge goose neck trailer in black, when clean they make for an awesome combo. I always go out of my way, when I see a good looking black vehicle, too tell the owner how nice it looks. I know what it takes to make it that way, and like to offer encouragement to others. Good luck with your new truck purchase.
