I always liked filling their hole full of gas and lighting it. The buggers would fly into the flames one after another till the flame went out. pour more gas in the hole, and the fire still in the hole lights it, and then it blows burning gas at you. tons of fun.

I can sympathize...

I was stung by Paper wasps about 15 times on my nearly bald head the other day. Fixing the fence with the neighbor and he happened to hit it with a hammer right where a small nest was. Of course I was closer than he was...

I haven't moved that quick since high school days.

It was my first time being stung by anything ever. Luckily I didn't have any reaction and they lost interest fairly soon. But being a former medic, I checked my pulse and made sure I could swallow a few times to be sure over the next few hours. Using cold beer to be sure.



They build lot of little nests of 20-30, so now I'm on the seach and destroy missions almost every weekend... Tile roof, lots of targets.

:-laf If you have no other first aid and you are taking a leak that'll help take some of the sting out. Of course some might have qualms if the sting is on your face area.

I found a good sized nest in my shed & attacked it at 4 AM when I knew they'd still be sleeping. Emptied out a can of hornet spray on them- they didn't have a chance!!

I attacked a wasp nest stuck inside a dead tree stump with that wasp killer spray and did pretty good. One came right for me and got my hand. I was lucky, able to kill hundreds and only got stung once... that one sting hurt... . 30-50 i would be ballin. .

Unfortunately, I'm allergic to bee and wasp stings. I carry an epipen - just in case. Glad you made it! Those little nasties plumb freak me out.

Yep, I feel that. The last time I was stung, I spent almost a week in the hospital.

We've got two kinds of yellow jackets that live around here. One is the larger one that is about the same size as the red wasp. It and the red wasp are about the same as far as being aggressive. Then we've got some small yellow jackets (look about half the size), and they've just got bad attitudes. I'd swear they'll attack just for looking at them wrong. And when they build a nest, they pile on. Top, bottom and the sides.



Nasty little buggers, I could do without all of them.

Once moving a pile of old scrap boards and plywood I had a swarm of bumble bees come after me in a track loader. Luckily two of the broken windows on the loader had been replaced the day before. Also just a couple days ago I was setting next to this large tree in my motorgrader and all of a sudden this swarm of hornets came out of the the tree and swarmed the grader. Yeah buddy thanks for the sealed cab and good AC. I got on the Nextel and gave the open cab roller guys a holler not to come down where I was right yet. I got a 10-4 "T" response :-laf .

Our part of Texas has plenty of everything that can sting, bite, poison, infect, etc. Loads of yellow jackets, dirt daubers, hornets, bumble bees, you name it. I got zapped several times as a kid and developed a healthy dislike for the varmints, and as usual the trusty old Red Ryder was the perfect tool to take out targets of opportunity while feeding and watering the horses. The wasps love to light on the water for an instant - BLOOOP! :-laf :-laf That'll teach 'em.



I also learned that . 22 rat shot will do a heck of a number on their nest but some of the buggers will escape and seek retribution. The brake cleaner and wasp killer sprays work great, but beware - if you just shrivel the wings and don't kill 'em outright, they will come after you on foot and crawl up your leg - MOST unpleasant.



One of the neatest things I ever saw was when the fellow came out once to fill our butane tank. He lifted the cover and a huge swarm of yellow jackets boiled out, he was holding the hose and quick as a wink he pulled the lever and burped out a big cloud of freezing butane - the yellow jackets rained out of the air like they were frozen solid and actually went "ping" as they bounced off the tank. Now THAT'S how to take 'em out

We did our final grading around the house today and I noticed a tree stump near the driveway with yellow jackets swarming around it. I think the dozer vibrating the ground had em angry. (I had just moved a pile of brush right next to it yesterday.

I've had plenty of run-ins with the nasty little guys. My worst was 43 or stings and I'm pretty pranoid of that kind of encouter again. (stood on top of nest not knowing it was there)

One bizarre event was when we came home from work one Fri evening to find our (only a few month old) condo swarming with yellowjackets INSIDE. They had made a HUGE nest in the attic under the insulation and were using the drywall on the ceiling for their building material. When they went too far and made a hole in the paper, they came in and couldn't find a way out. A lot of dead ones on the floor and some of the windows almost covered with 'em. I cranked up the A/C and went to a hotel and called an exterminator.
My 7 year old son got stung by something tonight as he was getting in bed. Very tiny, bright green bug. Baby wasp/hornet maybe?

Glad you're OK Steve. The burning pain sucks, but then they start to itch.

We used to put a chemical concoction down the holes at night. We would mix it in a can until it began to get warm. Then you dump it in and wait. It would get so hot, it would ignite itself and the heat underground would kill the grass close-by. Worked every time.

About 30 years ago, as a teenager, I was working for a landscape maintenance company mowing lawns at a condominium complex. I was pushing a mower and felt something sting me in the leg, I look down and both my legs were covered with hornets! I saw them swarming out of a hole in the lawn that I had just mowed. Luckily there was a lake about 50 yds. away, I did the 50 yd. dash getting stung the whole way & then dove into the lake. I had about 120 stings, but no allergic reaction... just went home early that day.

I, too, have done the Yellow Jacket Two-Step... I was 8 years old, and stepped on a nest. I got stung over 100 times, that's when the nurses quit counting. I was quite a ways from the house, it was over an hour before I got back, and about another 45 mins to the hospital. As we got into the ER, my breathing stopped from my reaction. Needless to say I was very lucky...



I was in the ICU for 48 hrs, then in a reg room for another 5 days for observation, thank God dad had excellent health insurance! Had to carry an epi-pen for years after that, tho I haven't had a reaction in about 10 years now.



The worst stings are those white-faced hornets... I'm 6'7", 325# or so, and those lil buggerswill drop me to my knees...

We used to get bees and yellowjackets in hay bales. So we would take a hand pumped weed sprayer and put a little gasoline in it. They would come up in a swarm and all you had to do was spray it in their direction and they would fall out of the air instantly. Pretty cool to see. I guess it burns out what they have for lungs. The worst part was pitching the bale out the window of the barn, then making sure the cows didn't get to it.
