Need help on 06 Cummins with knock...

Yesterday while towing the fiver, the truck would "miss" every once in a while, or it seemed.

I am well instrumented and all parameters monitored were normal. There was no change in engine rpm, or trans temp.

It was when I got home that I pulled the 783 code. I erased it and drove the truck empty later and the code did not recur.

I have checked the battery connections and now swapped the trans relay with another same relay in the box.

The fluid is at the proper level, color and smell...

My question is, what else should I be looking at or worried about?

Please see my sig for trucks general details.

Mileage is 33,600

Headed out the door now to check the trans wiring harness...

computer controls od shifting so... . since you swapped out the relay i would hook back up to the 5th wheel and test drive it... .

Thanks.

I also found this during my inspection. It is a wire harness on the left side of trans and it was full of trans fluid. I took it apart and sprayed crc electrical cleaner into both parts of the connector and reconnected...

That is the range sensor module, aka neutral safety switch and gear display. check you trans harness plug above ans behind it for fluid contamination.

Pulled the main harness connector up by the bell housing apart and some dust came out of it. Could be from possibly getting lake water into it when launching the boat, I don't know.

So, it got electrical cleaner, blew it out with compressed air and snapped back together.

Now, I just need to drive it and see if this reoccurs...

You also need to find out where the trans fluid is coming from? (As cerb mentioned also check the trans control plug for fluid contamination).

I had a similar situation, my front band adjustment stud was leaking and saturated the control plug with fluid that caused shorting between the pins. My truck did not act like it was "missing", but it did shift erratically and throw codes.

The trans control plug did have fluid contamination. I couldn't tell if the fluid was coming from the front band adjuster or if it was coming up through the plug itself.

Can those two items be replaced with the valve body dropped or does the trans have to be pulled?

If it is the later, I will most likely just deal with the issue and clean the plugs every once in a while...

I have been driving it all over today and have not had a recurrence of the overdrive low voltage code.

I'm not sure about replacing the sensors because I didn't have to. I believe it unlikely the fluid is coming through the sensor, but more likely being pushed out of the front band adjustment stud.

I see you have a DTT trans also, I spoke with Bill K when I was having problems. He directed me to place a thin copper washer under the locknut that holds the adjuster in place, he also had me use thread sealant on the stud itself. That's what I did, then re-torque the band (29in lbs ??) then back off 2 turns, and tighten the locknut down.

I had also cleaned the plug connections with an aerosol cleaner and coated with dielectric grease before re-connecting. No more leak and no more problems.

Awesome info , thanks!!!

I will check the band when I get back home Friday and post what I find.

The forward band adjuster was clean.

I will put some dielectric grease on the trans control pins and rock on.

Looks like I will just be towing the boat this weekend. It is about half the weight of the TH.

Cheers
