Hey fellers,

I am pulling the pump to get at my blown tappet cover gasket and getting the gear off is PITA. I made the puller with 1/2" flat bar stock and drilles two holes and threaded in the 8mm bolts but the flat bar is bending I tried to hit it with a large drift pin thinking that would knock it loose but no luck. I guess I will stop in the morning and pick up some 5/8" flat bar and try that.

Any body else have this much trouble removing the gear ? any tricks or tips ?

Thanks guys,

BBD

Silly question but did you remove the large nut from the end of the shaft?

That was the tough part for me. Had to use an 18 inch breaker bar and a 3 foot cheater just to break it loose.

I had no problem breaking the gear loose from the shaft once the nut was removed.

I have a Snap On gear puller which is round, about 3/8 inch thick and looks like cast iron but it did not take a lot of pressure to get the gear to pop loose.

If you are using half inch thick bar stock by a couple of inches wide that should be adequate.

Since it is a tapered shaft, once you have both bolts tightened up on the gear, tightening each bolt alternately, one side then the other, should rock it loose.

I put a socket and 1/2" rachet on there and smacked it with a big hammer. Nut came right off. For the gear I used a steering wheel puller (small disk with a threaded hole) that I filed the slots slightly. (to get the bolt spacing to work)

No problem with the nut and lock washer, just a pita with the gear, I will give it another go tonight picking up the 5/8" flat bar after work.

Don't over torque the nut when reinstalling the pump gear. Especially the early ones (First Gen's) Some of them have been known to break intwo and it will destroy the rest of the gear train maybe the whole short block.

For the 2000 ctd the torque is 125 ft lbs Not sure about the other years. . kurt

I went to 160 as directed by Piers, I just hope the wife had a good grip on the barring tool underneath as I was tourqing the pump.

BigBadDodge,

Just a reminder on the Tappet Cover Gasket. When you install it on the cover, make sure you have the thick part of the gasket towards the engine. The gasket slips over the edge of the cover, and the thickest side should be towards the engine block. There is also a front to back position as well, but it is marked on the gasket.

I saw the tab that said front and asumed it meant front of the gasket as looking at it not in relation to the position on the block and in doing so it puts the thick part against the block

BBD, PM me if you have leakage problems or if your blowing the gasket off, I'm now on round 4 on mine and I might have a fix now... . totally different approach.

Told ya' in Muncie it wasn't too bad of a job, I've got it down to a science now... ... got to love the pain!
