I just got a call from a friend with a early 98 truck with a surging idle.

I have not seen the truck, but here is the problem.

Sometimes at idle in gear -auto- it will go rump-rump until either the throttle is touched or it is put in neutral.

What do we look for?

Is this a pump issue?

Does he use any diesel fuel additive such as Howes or Stanadyne? Some times a pump can get sticky and an additive will free up the pump. Fill up a new fuel filter with Stanadyne, install it, and the run the truck for a few minutes until the additive is in the pump. Let it sit overnight. Drive it next day and if there was anything sticking, it will now be free. It works and Stanadyne will not hurt the pump or injectors.

I will ask then about their use or non use of additives.

Are you saying you have seen these pumps do this?

I had a problem on my 95 Ram, the throttle was sticky. Could have described it as a surge too. I was prepared to pull the pump, but before I did, I went and seen an authorized Bosch pump re-builder. They told me to try Stanadyne. I did, it worked and now I used additive regularly. Treat the fuel in the tank too.

My 1994 5 speed does that lumpy idle thing after driving at highway speeds for 20 minutes or more. Where can I get the Stanadyne so I can try it also?

I just talked to the trans shop that has the truck.

They rebuilt the trans about 3 months ago, and feel the issue is the torque converter, which is a Precision. They dropped the pan and found flakes of aluminum .

I'll up date you later.

PS, I've been trying to get them to try a DTT, but they feel they can save some money!!!

At my Job we have Hobart 400 cycle power trucks that use BT6 engines with the P-7100 Injector Pumps, and they surge at cold Idle something terrible. I haven't heard of any Dodge's doing it. Moose

Surge at idle

BNTM 12v 98 w/122k after towing my car trailer 250 miles I noticed a lope or surge w/a/c on and sometimes stalling. Adjusted the valves... ... . NO MORE surging. .
