P/Oed-muffler runaround

just went to a muffler shop in my town of scarborough here and got an jerk who was condescending. i asked if he had any flow through mufflers and he kept saying "no,no, no. go get one of those junks go to napa or somewhere. i won't do it unless it's done right". what's done right?!?! i told himi that my dad would fab it up, but, GRR ?The way he acted--well, that's not how you do business I've got a cat that's most likely pretty plugged right now. the guy at Midas was going to sell me one of the raven mufflers for $130 He also gave me the runaround "taking off the cat is illegal". should i get a resonator from a 24v? when i had my straight pipe it was nice to have such a quick spool up! should i punch out the cat? do i push the screen from the 3inch side out the 4 inch side

let me reply to this and then we'll move you along to the P&A forum



Stans headers sells 4" down pipes you can get a Allied, Walker or Magnaflow muffler at just about any BIG truck shop.



then you need a stick of 4" tubing. again just about any BIG truck shop will handle this or any old muffler shop can order it for you. if you dont want it to exit out the rear you are done, turn it out the side or down and enjoy.



or you can get a 3" to 4" adapter at just about any Napa store and re-use your old tailpipe over the axle.

I had the same thing happen a several shops in Northern California. I just wanted them to bend me a piece of 3" to replace the muffler. Could not get any of them to do it. They all wanted me to bring the truck in so they could tell me what I needed. Which translates to... sell me what would make them the most money. I finaly went with the Genos kit even though I think it is over priced.

I also have a 98 12V and this is what I did. I used a hammer and a piece of angle iron to punch out the cat guts. I got a 4 inch Magnaflow muffler and a 4 inch Walker Mandrel bent tailpipe off the Internet, and a crome tip from Genos. I had to cut and weld the exhaust hangers to the new stuff. It cost me less than $200. 00 for everything. I still has the cat shell installed so it passes inspection.

I have a buddy with a 99 2500 auto. He welded a rod onto a drill bit and, on the in-put side of the stock muffler, drilled out the center baffle. On the out-put side, he knocked out the center... so he can see daylight thru the middle but has baffling on the outsides. It is louder than stock, no drone... and picked up 1. 6mpg running empty! Just a thought.

well, i'm in the middle of gutting the cat out--pretty hard to do. any tips? i've got a long thin drill here, but only with screwdriver tips (still haven't gotten the special hex-bottom drill bits). the regular one wont works of course. so, i'm still trying. i like the hole in the muffler idea!

well, i got it done. my dad came home with a bigger hammer so i could get the crowbar/pinchbar through the center... . then it started falling apart. a little more sound, more smoke being released, and faster spool up. i like it.

In this case I would tell them it's for a farm tractor.
