How big a job is it to take off the pump? Anyone got any good destructions on how to do it? Anyone have any recommendations on where to send it (in/near michigan) to get it "calibrated". I don't want to have a total job done on it, just a tune-up...

While I'm thinking about it, would I be better off/cheaper just swapping it out for a different (180hp) pump?

If your going to swap pumps get a 215 hp one. I've heard on the pump removal you need about 3 wrists on each arm for some bolts, but 've never done it myself.

bluthndr,

If you are looking for a tune up and a little additional fueling it would not be cheaper to go to a different pump unless you are looking for big HP as the 160 pump does have its limitations.

As far as local pump shops, PM me for more info.

When you've pulled a few there nothing..... say 1 hour it will be on the bench!

The only difficult bolt is the one between the pump and the block below the overflow valve as I remember. A 12-inch or longer extension and a universal joint or wobble extension does the trick. It's kinda nice to have a second set of hands to help hold it as you pull the last bolt and slip it out. They're a bit heavy.

For convenience, set the engine at TDC before you pull it. Then you can pin the pump at factory timing before you install it and the engine should at least start. You'll want to re-time it after its installed.

Well, the pump is going to Scheid @ Indy this weekend Oo. - if I can get it off! I have everything I can find off of it, and I have about 1/8" between the pump flange and the gearcase. The gear is off, the lines (inj, feed, return, and oil), the throttle cable bracket, the aneroid, and the 4 nuts that hold it on are off. I can wiggle the pump up and down, but it does not seem to want to come any further.

I just spent another hour on it like that trying to get it out, but nothing has changed. Thought about prying against the gearcase and pump flange a little, but the last thing I want to do is crack either one. What gives!? #@$%! Am I missing something? I sure don't see anything else, but it's tight around there...

Yes, the gear is seperated - thought I was gonna break my puller! Is there a bracket or another cable/line somewhere at the back near the bottom I could have missed???

Nope, you pull the gear, the 4 nuts from the front of the pump then the 2 long bolts in the middle, the fuel lines(supply and injector) throttle linkage in the front fuel shut off plug AFC boost line(only) and pry it off as it slides in place(kind of tough)

We wouldn't kid about something like that. Just about even with the fuel inlet,

there are two bolts. One on the fender side, one on the block side. If you lean over the pump like you are going to look inside the rear delivery valve opening look between the pump and the block and you will see a bolt head. The other one is on the fender side in the same orientation. If those haven't been removed, that might be why it is not coming out.

Actually I prefer to take the bracket off with the pump. I also cut the corner off the head to make it easier to get to the bolts.

Ahhhhh ha! The fender side bolt hung me up - I thought it was just to hold down a return spring bracket...

Thanks for the help everyone!

mine is still stuck. piddling all morning on it. don't know if I can lift it when it does come off. arms wore out. think it's just the o-ring in the back of the housing. maybe some squirtem stuff will help. yeah. squirtem. :(

After pulling the head off a couple of times. The pump feels sort of light. But if you put a block of wood under it you can pull it out a ways, then set it on the wood untill you get your second wind.
