I bought a 99 twin turbo 24v p-pumped CTD in January of 07 and have been working through some problems. It has been setting since October 07 and I finally have felt like working on it.
I’m looking for info and suggestions!
First it gets terrible mpg 10 or so, starts hard, smokes at idle and terrible at full power, but lots of power with hi egts 1200+ within seconds! So changes need to be made.
I need to remove the timing cover to repair a leak which requires that the p7100 be removed, so there are a couple questions that I need to ask.
Before anything is touched I recorded the injection and cam timing so I know where I am.
1st what cam do I have? It has an after market cam with a mechanical lift pump and I recorded the following details,
Intake valve lift is 0. 342, valve starts to open at 6deg before TDC and closes 30deg after BDC, duration is 213 degrees.
Exhaust valve lift is 0. 333, valve starts to open 130deg after TDC and closes 6deg after TDC, duration is 236 degrees.
The cam gear has a bolt holding it on that has symbols that indicate to torque it then 180 degrees. Anyone???
2nd the injectors are Bosch # 0432193635 939 681 4183 and look like they were originally 7 hole injectors then someone added 4 larger holes near the tip. This may be the biggest problem.
I need to improve mpg but the pump was built for 800hp and also has a 4500 to 4800 rpm gsk. The fuel plate is currently positioned for 600+-hp.
My concern is installing too small of an injector and damaging the pump due to excessive pressures, the pump also has a 4500 to 4800 rpm gsk!
I have contacted the engine builder for build details such as cam and piston# but many hands were in this so it looks like a mixed bag.
I pulled it in Cummington Mass in fall 07 and won the just for fun event at 267+- feet.
A video was taken, I will post if I can figure out how.
I also have a 12 valve CTD under the bench from my 1990 which I bought new but it needs a head which has 5 cracks between the valves. It could possibly be an option, but not yet!
Thanks in advance.
Tim
