I have heard some things about p pumping a 24 valve truck. If the costs are overlooked is it worth the time and effort to do. I have thought about it but still don't know the pros from the cons. Can someone point out the ups and downs

Kevin

Pros:

Lots of Power (the primary reason for doing it is plenty of fuel flow)

Reliability & durability of P-pump

Runs nicely when dialed in

Cons:

Can be difficult to tune. For some it works out well, for others it has been quite a challenge getting the right injector setup & delivery valves, timing, etc.

Injetors need to be fitted to this combo, limiting injector swaps

Custom injector lines, if one goes bad you can't buy a new one on the road

Considering how many 600, 700, and 800+ hp vp44 fueled trucks there are out there, one would need a better reason than hp to do the swap. If you are having chronic pump problems it might be something to look into. Keep in mind that making it run is a piece of cake. Making it run just right can take time. I have what is for me an ideal combination for a daily driver right now. But It took 7 sets of injectors to get here. The last set I bought idle perfectly for the first time. But they were 1300 dollars. Injectors for good power, smoke, and that rough idle that some people like(?) are easy to find. Fuel mileage is good also.

thanks guys. I appreciate the info. I would really like to do the swap, does anyone sell it in kit form, or what parts do i need to do it.

Give J. R. Adkins a call if your wanting some info and interested in doing it, I know he has a few p-pumped 24v's running around I've seen one of the personally nice job and he's a great guy to deal with.

I would not recommend it, but I do not personally have one. I had a buddy just recently do this swap on his 2000 and it has been a real pain to get it right. It still idles very rough (sounds like a gasser) and does a lot of popping and cracking. It has been timed probably half a dozen times and delivery valves have seen a lot of changing. If you do do it use a reputable shop. He used a guy who does good work, but just doesn't have the experience, testing, and technology like Scheid and the big guys.
