P0216 code and #1 fuel??

Good morning all!

My '99 has been throwing the P0216 code intermittantly for the last 6 weeks or so, and have used my OBD-II scan tool to read and clear the MIL. Thanks to previous discussions on this site, I know that this error is indicative of a injection pump going south, or a sickly lift pump, or both.

The pressure from the lift pump, according to my guage, is good but not great (13 at idle, ~9 WOT), and has been for some time. These values have been confirmed with a mech. guage. I haven't noticed any performance degradation or hard starts or other symptom of an injection pump on its way out. And only the P0216 code is set, no other. The code is almost always (but not always) set when I first start the truck, and back out of a heated garage into the cold.

We've been using #1 diesel up here in Fairbanks AK since about mid-Nov. Could there be a connection between using #1 and the error? I always use fuel conditioner/anti-gel/lube. I know there is a "#1 Diesel performance enhancement" TSB -- perhaps this might be worth looking into? Has anybody had the TSB performed, and if so what are your impressions?

I don't have any performance enhancements wired up.

Any thoughts? (I am of course trying to convince myself that I don't need to buy another injection pump!)

Thanks.

Craig

#1 doesn't give the lubrication that the pump needs. You should be blending with number 2 or using a good additive to provide lubrication. I would switch to a blend or go with a tank of #2.
