On the way home yesterday my engine quit and a Ford came and towed me home, I wish it had been dark. I have a 98. 5 with 200k and it has not given me any trouble, I do not know when the pump might have been changed out as I bought it used with 175k miles on it. I will probably get one from Freight Line as I have a friend that has a fleet and gets a great price. (is there a better pump to buy?)

My question is ----

What else should I replace when I do the pump and lift pump??? Should I do anything to the vacuum / power steering pumps??

Cam position sensor?

Change power steering oil? 200k and I do not know if it has ever been changed.



If I can get a Fed-X pump what would the revs be limited to?

Definitely replace the crank angle sensor when you have the VP44 out. At less than $40 from Hoesli Diesel, you can't pass up a great opportunity for such easy access to do it.

lift pump

You should test you fuel pressure, my money says your lift pump is dead and that is why your VP-44 died#@$%!



I have a warning light and checked the pressure with a gage every time that I changed the oil. The light caught a failed lift pump two mounts ago and I changed it out after only driving less than five miles back home. This vp44 has no reman sticker on it so I don't have any idea how old it is, I doubt that it made it 200k. I am going to put a new lift pump on for the warrantee and mount the one that is on it on the rail to have tandem pumps.
 
As mentioned, make sure the lift pump is putting out at least 12psi at idle, no less than 6psi WOT. Also, when you change the VP, buy the return valve too. It's in the banjo fitting on the fuel return line from the pump, and does not come with the pump.

Thanks I thought that the fitting came with the pump, it is the pressure regulater.

I did not realise that the pump timing was different other than a rev limiter. Do you know of any thing else that is different? I would like to know what the max rpm is.

Where I got that info is from Blue Chip site. He found a way to reprogram the Fed-X computer to work in dodge and uses them in his VP rebuilds.

What makes our computer better…. .



Federal Express experienced so many computer failures that they convinced Bosch to make them a special computer to deal with this issue, because the computer that most rebuilders use, doesn't work or last much better than the OEM ones. Well as you might have guessed by now, ALL of our pumps come with a new Fedex rated computer. This computer is the one used on Fedex's Freightliner chassis used in so many of their delivery trucks. One of the problems we had to overcome to be able to use this computer was the difference in the software in the Freightliner computer. The maximum RPM is limited to 2500, which won't do in a Dodge application, and the rest of the software makes the Dodge run badly. WE figured out how to get Dodge software into the Fedex computer and it works great. It is exactly the same software Dodge uses so it works fine with all aftermarket devices. Our competitors don't often replace the computer as it is expensive and if it works on the test stand briefly, and at 70 degrees or so, then it must be okay! It isn't tested in prolonged heat and or cold in the typical rebuild process so it probably will act differently in real world use of your truck. Imagine not knowing how many heat cycles the computer has suffered, so you have no idea how soon the used computer will fail, when you use a competitor’s product. Our pumps come with a NEW computer with NO heat cycles on it! Common sense prevails!
