Started throwing p0243 and p0480 codes a few months ago. Dealership wanted $3500 to replace turbo and cooling fan. I wound up doing some research and replaced the waste gate solenoid with a waste gate plug. Less than a week later the p0243 code came back up on CEL. Because of the great state I live in, I have to smog my private diesel truck. It won't lass because of this code. I checked all the fuses and they are fine, except number 8, heated mirrors. I can't get power at that fuse, but the light comes on in the cab when the button is pushed. Called the place where I bought the plug and they say it is not the turbo, check fuses. Did that and am now stumped. Don't want to take it to the dealership and get screwed, again. Any ideas? I am not al electrical genius, but can take directions!!! If this is a continuing issue with this motor, why doesn't dodge deal with it or help owners cover some of the diagnostics? Frustrated beyond belief! Thanks for any help offered.

Man I thought it was the problem for a minute, but I'm not blowing any fuses. Can the cooling fan malfunctioning have something to do with it? The truck never hits 200 degrees tho.

It doesn't matter how warm the truck gets. The fan is connected to a data bus line for the computer so the computer can tell when there's a problem with the fan speed. If the fan fails it short internally and pull that line down then it can cause all kinds of failures because that line is used by other items.
You need a new fan clutch. Buy the one from the dealer because the aftermarket ones are junk and you will be sorry if you get one.

I copy that. So the fan clutch can cause that damn p0243 code to show up? And the dealership wants to replace the turbo, real nice outfit.

ok i can help i have modified about ten of these now. if you kept the old solenoid, cut the plug off of it (first check the wires at the base of the solenoid, the heat causes them to break and you can fix it) next solder a 147 ohm two watt resistor on the plug wires and plug it in, no more code. for the long run you need to modify the solenoid and put it back on or add a wastegate or install a boost elbow. the way it is now will over spin the turbo and shorten life. watch your boost and not go over 33 psi and your fine. we modify our solenoids because you do not need to remove the turbo from the truck where you do with the other two methods. pm me for instructions if you go this route

I also have code PO243 coming up on my 07 3500 with the 5.9 what does the electric wastegate solenoid do as it would seem its not needed as the wastegate actuator has a pressure line going to it to control it. My wiring harness does not rub the dipstick tube so no chafing issues as per the above video the wires coming out of the solenoid also look ok and the check engine light will turn off occasionally as well any ideas before I go to the dealer

the solenoid works different than you think, read the following.
. if you look at the solenoid there are three ports on it separated by two o rings the hole in the end is manifold pressure. the center is to the waste gate. the waste gate spring is set to 20 psi. now look at the portion that has the threads. you will see four holes. this leads back to the intake. inside the solenoid there is a cup with a spring that when no voltages is applied it covers the 4 hole port setting the waste gate opening at 20 psi. when the ecm calls for more air it sends a modulated 5 volt signal to the solenoid to increase opening to the required pressure up to a limit of 30 psi. this is for emissions. if you have excessive air you produce NOX the ecm keeps the pressure just barely enough for combustion thus the smoke. first cut the plug off of the solenoid and get a 100 to 147 ohm 1 watt resistor and solder it to the wires and plug it back in to fool the ecm into thinking the solenoid is ok. remove the three o rings to prevent damaging them and cut the solenoid into about 7/8 inch above the base that mates to the turbo next cut the square part where the wrench goes deeper to make it easier to tighten up. i cut some more of the outer barrel off for looks but you do not have to. Next remove any parts left in the center tube; you will be able to see all the way through the tube. tap the tube with a 1/8 in. npt. braze the tip of the high pressure tip closed and drill a smaller hole in it to limit the amount of air, make a washer out of thin shim stock to cover the 4 ports. next screw a needle valve in where the plug would have gone. take the rubber washer out of the valve and use a piece of copper wire in its place, you do not need a seal, this is only for resistance on the needle. Set the valve to 33 psi waste gate opening, usually takes about three stops in a quarter mile.
