P0341 - Camshaft Sensor Performance

This is getting old. Looking for ideas.

Truck is an 07 5. 9. Will do it without any boxes installed.

The code first popped up back in July. Every time I would get on it hard it would toss the code as soon as I would let up.

Problem started shortly after cam install. Pulled cover off and found that I could move the cam in and out just a little. About . 020 I would say. Not much.

I figured the cam was worn a little on the retainer surface and got a new one from F1. Cam had about 60k on it because it was in my 03 before.

Truck had been fine for about 3k miles.

Then last weekend on the way home, as I was slowing down for the house, it popped it again. Then again today as I was just coasting through town.

WTF?

I have a few other little issues that may or may not have anything to do with it.

#1. Sitting at a stop light in gear... Truck will stumble all of a sudden. Nothing big. But I do notice it. No code. Just a little hickup. Thought it was the AC, but I can turn everything off, and it will still do it.

#2. I can't use the cruise control when in 3rd gear. It will start to surge.

#3. 1st Cam gear was from an 03, 2nd was from an 05. Does the 07 have a different cam gear / tone ring? I do a few cam swaps, so I have an extra cam gear so we can press the gear on ahead of time. The one from my 07 is now in an 05 with no issues.

Sensor is magnetic and probably has accumulated some particles. Needs to be wiped off/cleaned but it's smarter to just replace it. Part is around $20 at cummins shop. It's hard to get to. Easiest way is to remove the ECM but it can be done around it.

I did wipe it off when I had the cam out... But there wasn't anything on it.

Do you think there is enough stuff in a new motor to gunk it up? I only have 11k miles...

I don't really know. I had a similar symptom in that it would set the MIL on deceleration, usually at moderate speeds. It was fairly infrequent. I replaced mine when I replaced the PS pump and it hasn't happened since then. I think heat might get to it once it's degraded. It usually happened either in traffic or on a hilly, winding road somewhere when my speed was changing a lot. It did happen enough that I knew what code I'd have when the MIL came on. It also seemed to be more "likely" to happen the older my oil was but keep in mind that I change my oil about once a week... I might have just been putting that together in my head. I didn't notice any other changes with the new one, just stopped getting the MIL.

What year is yours?

I also just remembered... I changed the oil just before it happened. Only about 100 miles on the change.

I think it may have been the same the first time it happened as well...

Strange.

I guess I will try replacing it. Truck runs fine other than the MIL.

Mine's an '06. Hardest part about changing it is a combination of tightness (space) and being able to see it. It's exactly the same sensor as the Crank sensor so you can always look over at that while you work with the Cam sensor. A mirror and/or a second person looking through the wheel well would be handy too, especially when trying to get the connector off. Once you reach up there you're pretty much blind. It's one of those things that when you get done you'll think "why in the **** was that such a pain in the ***???". Don't forget to release the little red lock on the connector...

Getting it out is worse than getting the new one back in. I think the hardest part was figuring out how to press the tab and pull on the connector at the same time. Just too little room.

I can get the connector off fairly easy. . Had lots of practice on my 03 when I was running the TST.

How do you get the sensor itself out? Is it held in place by a bolt or??

Just one bolt, same as the Crank Sensor. Sensor has an O-ring, which you can see on the other sensor since it isn't used.

Once the bolt's out, just pull the sensor straight out.

Should be the same bolt too (same allen key).

Oil the o-ring and try not to twist the sensor as it first goes in the hole (general practice).

This prevents cutting the o-ring on the machined edge of the hole.

Once it's in, it's OK to twist it a little to get the bolt in.

Thanks I had dodge make me a new key. The new key is what gave me po633 I will ask why it does that 65. 00 for the key. _________Thanks BEN.
