I did the key flippy thingy tonight just for fun and turned up code 514--Battery Temp. Sensor Performance/Rationality. WTH does that mean? Funny that it's there. Tonight I mentioned to dad that my batteries might be getting tired cause they don't seem to jump like they used to--slower cranking.

Any ideeears??

Cattletrkr,

^ months after I got my truck I had same code and took the truck to the dealer and they said "Bad sensor" and replaced it under warranty. Basically the sensor is outta range, eigther from low temps of factory defect. Best of luck.

I had that same code happen to me twice First time when it was about 3 months old. I cleared it and didn't think much about it. It just happened to me WEdnesday again, one of the techs at the dealership says that they get a lot of battery temp sensors in diesels that need to be replaced. Mine was done under warranty

I only got that code in the winter months.

Where is that little sucker and how difficult is it to replace? I'm well out of warranty and don't want to pay for something simple.

Thanks

Ok guys the sensors are not bad... ... ... ... it is a rationality issue. The ecm wants to see both sensors being close to the same. The battery temp sensor is under the battery where engine temps will keep it warm for some time after shutdown, the ambient sensor is outside behind the grill it will cool down very quickly in cold climates causing the code to be set. D/C is aware of this condition but has not addressed it officially yet.

It is under your driver side battery. You have to remove the battery to get to it

Ok, here's my thoughts.

What the heck does DC need a battery temp sensor for anyway? What possible help could it privide? Sound like more worthless electonics to me.

If it won't cause any problems, I ain't about to fix it. Code P0514 may just be around for a while.

it is a rationality issue

Sounds like DC has a rationality issue to me... :-laf :-laf ... battery temp sensor...

I get it whenever I move the truck from parked outside to inside the garage if it's been parked long enough to cool down. I. e ambient temp sensor registers higher than the battery temp sensor after moving into the garage. It doesn't have any prolem the other way around ambient temp lower than battery temp. If the truck is plugged in (battery heaters are under the battery) then no code again because the ambient temp is lower than battery temp.

Hrmm. .come to think about it I think that is when I have seen that code on my 03 and 05.

It was when I let the truck set all day outside (10 or more hrs) then start up to move inside and the next morning I saw the code. Thats an unusual condition for me but has happened.

I believe the battery temperature sensor is there to provide feedback to the ECM (which coincidentally controls the output of the alternator) so it can adjust current output to what's best for the battery. I can't recall if that's the exact phrase, as my service manual is at home, and I'm not, but it mentions something to that effect in there.

Bingo... ... ... ... . it is for fine tuning the charging system

Bob

So with this rationality issue, is all well with my charging system or is this something I should do something about? Is it possibly just dirty or something?

p. s. My garage isn't big enough for this QC dually behemoth so it doesn't see any odd changes in ambient vs. batt. temp. Once in a while it gets run in the shop for routine maintenance, but it did that all last winter too.

All is well. I suspect there may be a flash for this issue eventualy. It is a slow process,once the engineers are done it must go through emmisions testing and the legal dept. :-{}

Bob

Called my dealer shortly after my last post. Service manager knew the code off the top of his head. He said they see it a lot in the diesels. I think he said they've only seen one problem, the rest they just ignore. He told me if I have any hard starting or unusual black smoke to get it looked at. The only symptom I have is the slightly harder starts, but I'm betting that's from recently cranking the rokktech sensor to full advance.

Thanks ya'all.

What is the key flippy thingy?

Sometimes when I start my truck the overhead computer/temp gauge does not work unless I shut the engine off and restart. The other day while going down the interstate, I shut the engine off and restarted it and I got that same code. Probably would get it if you tow started it too. I think it is just a computer getting confused thing. Cleared it and all is fine. I think computers on a diesel should be illegal!

:-laf The computers on a diesel are the thing that is keeping them legal :-laf :-laf

The "key flippy thing" is holding the trip odometer reset while turning on the key. It tests the guages, lights, and displays any codes on the odometer. (displays 00 00 when finished)

It's pretty cool, try it out.

Thanks bighammer!!! I'll try it out tonight.

"Key flippy thingy" that I use is turn the key on and off three times and leave it on the last time. I've never tried the other way, but that sounds better. Either way will get you the codes.
