my '03, 48re, will not shift into OD. took it to dealer, they said that the computer needed reprograming, and also the "TPS voltage was high". they reprogramed the computer. . no change and same P0700 code. any ideas?

my '03 won't shift into o/d either & i also get a p0700 code. my dealer here sucks so i've been to a couple diesel repair shops but their computers can't access the dodge computer to diagnose it any further. i have had o/d the last 2 days but i assume it is intermittant & won't last. i've posted my problem elsewhere on this board & have gotten very little feedback other than a faulty temp. sensor in the transmission pan which makes sense, tps sensor, a couple different things regarding the governor. i'm not sure how the temp. sensor measures temp but since my transmission is due for a service anyway & the fluid is a little dirty (not burnt) i'm wondering if that's interferring w/ the sensor or is a coincidence. i'm doing whatever i can to avoid having to go back to my dealer. they're incompetent at best & i don't trust them

It is impossible to diagnose a trans on the internet but I can give you an idea of what you may be up against.

There are both electrical wiring and componets as well as mechanicle and hydraulic possibilities.

od switch

Apps

pcm

fuse

relay

wiring

all external to the trans.

internal you have temp sensor(transducer)

3-4 solenoid or past due for service and contaminated fluid

bad seals or worn retainer in od unit.

Not really a do it yourselfer repair job.

Good luck in finding a worthy shop, they are out there.

I had the same thing happen to me after the truck was about 6 months old. I could kill the switch and turn it back on and it would "force" the transmission to shift into OD. Iwas way out in the sticks when it happened.

At first the dealer couldn't diagnose it but an alert tech found corrosion on the pcm connectors. I thought this problem was the basis for the pcm harness recall.

Thats right, you will find all the trans signals go through that connector at the pcm,it should have been caught then... ... ... ... ... ... .

I should have specified that my truck is an '03 also and my problem happened before the pcm harness recall.

I feel kind of left out of the transmission problems... I have +/- 130 thousand on the truck and this is the only problem I've had and it was electrical.

i know it's impossible to diagnose over the internet but given that my problem comes & goes (currently in my third day with overdrive working again) do you guys have any ideas? i am overdue for a service & the fluid is a little dirty so contamination might be my problem. i want to get this fixed but no shops here can acess the computer with theirs, the local dealership SUCKS & the nearest competent transmission shops are all about 1 hour away. my location has turned a probably simple repair into a real pain in the ***.

dealer called and said truck was ready. picked it up checked for codes before leaving. none were present. drove off the lot and would not go into OD. rechecked the codes and P0700 is back again. it is back with the dealer.

where can i find info on the pcm harness recall?

i love my truck & the cummins engine is great but the longer i own my truck & the problems i read here as well as seeing friends have the less i'm impressed with dodge & my dealership in particular. lucky for dodge the powerstroke & duramax's are such pieces of crap dodge can put an excellent motor in a mediocre truck & have the best truck to offer & people still have to wonder why the japs have gained so much market share. why isn't more of mercedes benz's quality & engineering being incorporated into dodge. god knows i paid as much for my truck as a C class benz & you don't see them with thin paint, bad ball joints, junk trannys etc. i really do like my truck & would probably buy another given the other choices out there but this problem is really frustrating & ******* me off & i'm not all that thrilled i can't even depend on my local dealership to fix properly what they sell. now i'm starting to remember why i got ****** at dodge 20+ years ago & vowed then to never buy another one.

I have a friend who was a service advisor at one of the largest MB dealers in the country... ... ... ... . They have more than their share of problems and they cost a lot more than your Dodge to fix :-laf

since today is day 4 with o/d working again after not working last week except for 1 day & still getting code p0700 what would you be most suspicious of being the problem? at first i was leaning towards the temp sensor but now that the o/d is working again & worked 1 time while it was out it almost seems like a loose or coroded connector or the dirty transmission fluid did something. it would be nice if other computers could access the one in my truck but chrysler protects these like nuclear launch codes. do any of you guys know if any of the handheld computers out there will access this & tell me what the problem is? i don't mind buying one since i'm sure it'll come in handy again. i'd rather learn something here, diagnose & hopefully fix it myself rather than blindly turn it over to the parts changing dopes at my dealer. thanks to all you guys for your help & suggestions & please keep thm coming.

i gave them the TSB on the PCM and all appeared ok. he found a loose connection at the crank position sensor? talking to the tech it seems that dodge gives them very little to trouble shoot these problems. can't really blame the techs for that, can we? anyway, I have my OD back for now.
