a good friend of mine called me and said his 00 cummins died and will not start. when i got to his house i was told that the truck started to smoke real bad and then died but restarted. it then died again and would not restart. i see alot of chatter about lift pumps on the forum so i checked the pressure and to no supprise, no pressure. i removed the fuel filter and bumped the key to see if the can filled. nothing happened. the lift pump ran but did not pump fuel into the can. i replaced the lift pump with a new mopar and it now fills the can. i thought i had fixed the problem but the truck still will not start. i jumped on the computer to see the bleeding procedures that mopar recomends and completed it with no problems. it said to bleed the pump with the schrader on the side of the vp and if the truck still does not start to crack loose the #3, 4, and 5 inj. lines. when i did that and cranked the engine i get fuel but under no pressure. it barely came out of the high pressure line. after trying the bleeding with no luck i scanned the truck. i got a code detected code and a p1688 code. the 1688 description is internal pump failure. i cleared the code and turned on the key and the code immediatly came back. this does not sound good at all. does this mean the vp44 is bad or is there something else to check before ordering a new one. if i should get a new one, where should i get one from. he is not into the performance stuff and would probably just want to go with a stock perf. pump. any help would be great. i now have a dead dodge in my driveway, LUCKLY NOT MINE!

bite the bullet,,,, sorry to say the VP44 is dead!!! I just went through this a few months ago. The electonics are smoke in the pump. Sorry. :(:( Bought mine through Dodge... ... . the cheapiest I found,,,$1328 plus tax. Make sure you get the CPL# off the side of the pump before you call to order... . they will need it... . well atleast on the 98. 5.

sounds like you blew the diaphram out inside the vp44, with a little homework you should be able to find rebuilt pump for around 1000. 00 to 1100. 00.
