Hello, I have a 2001 Cummins, I recently got a check engine light on. I cycled the key and got a 1693 and a 1689 code. I have a comp box installed with the pump wire tapped. I rarely run it any higher then 1X1 for fear of frying the VP44. The truck is NOT hard starting, NOT sputtering, NOT surging, and I haven't had any dead pedal occurances. I have done a search and it seems that this code usually means dead VP44, but would it not be showing any symptoms? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM

and Injection Pump Module

Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection

pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine

control module.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC

Detected in ECM

A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM.

Got These from this web site or link, thought they may help you.

By the way, do you have a fuel pressure gauge? If so what has it been doing?

Not real sure what all the info I just posted means but I know there are people here on this site who do. Hope it helps. ;)

I went under the hood and cleaned the pump tap connection, after driving for 10 minutes, shutting down and starting up again, the check engine light is gone, and the truck is running fine. I don't know if that was the actual problem, or if this is going to come back and bite me in the *** soon anyway! thanks for replying.

A p0216, 1688, or 1689 usually indicate a failing VP-44. If the thing still drives ok (does not choke while driving), just keep on driving it until it fails. I would recommend a fuel pressure gauge and be ready to replace the VP-44 in the near future.

How is your Comp grounded, direct to battery? Fuel Pressure???

I recall reading a lot of theories here on TDR that VPs are somewhat predestined to fail or not. Tapping the comp wire just decreases the time in which the predestined VPs will fail. And this usually occurs within the 1st 20 min. I can't say if this is accurrate or hog wash, but it helps me sleep at night.

Many VPs experience failing before they completely die, especially the units with electronic problems.

I had the 1689 18 months ago, At the time i had 275s and a EZ.

Know i have EDM 4s and a DZ and the VP is still doing ok.

At the time i got the codes it stalled two times and a hicup or two.

I cleaned all connections including batteries cables. been ok since.

What version comp box do you have?? If it is the 7. 0 version that is your problem. Call edge and they will upgrade your box to a 8. 0 for free. I had the same problem and that fixed it.
