Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Hi Idle

Just recently, my truck has started throwing a P1693 (and nothing else after switching the key on/off three times) every time I put the truck under "hard" (see explanation below) acceleration.

To provide a bit of history on this problem...

2001 HO engine; 6-speed. The truck has approximately 147,000 miles on it and the original VP44. I recently had a FASS HPFP 150 GPH installed and shortly thereafter cleaned the IAT sensor. I did not throw any codes with WOT after the FASS and before the IAT cleaning. After the IAT cleaning, I can definitely generate a code.

I have an Edge Comp (with boost fooler) currently running on 5x5 that was running on 3x3 (since 105,000 miles) until after the FASS was installed. No other power or fueling enhancements are installed.

I have recently noticed a very slight flat spot when accelerating. It does not happen every time I accelerate and it seems to last just a fraction of a second. I can press the accelerator to bypass the flat spot.

The "hard" acceleration I alluded to earlier is about 3/4 throttle, usually in 4th or 5th and up a slight incline. The problem does not seem to present itself at lower throttle settings. The truck has always been unloaded when the check engine light is displayed.

During these "hard" accelerations, my boost has been in the 30-31 pound range and fuel pressure has never dropped below 14-15 psi (13. 5 at full throttle with the FASS).

I don't have a code reader and have not tried AutoZone or Floor-It Performance Diesel (John installed my FASS) to see if any more codes were thrown. I need to do that the next time the CEL is displayed.

In reading other posts on the P1693 code, some had suggested the APPS might be bad or the VP44 is dying a slow painful (to my wallet) death. Any comments?

Is the IAT involved or is this just a coincidence?

Thanks in advance for you comments and suggestions.

Did you find out what triggered the 1693 code? The same thing happened to me today. Punched the go pedal and the code appeared. Guess I'll need to get a code reader!

This is a companion code. An OBDII will be needed to fish out the real info. My lift pump was "out of range" when mine threw this code.

1693 just means that there is a code in one of the computers (either PCM or ECM). If there is a code in there, when you scan the computer, it will present itself.

The PCM turns off the MIL if what ever caused the code does not present itself after 3 full cycles of running (start through engine warmup and run), but the code(s) will remain in the computer(s) for 300 Engine cycles.

Scan with an ODB II scan tool to see what the real code is.

You could have set an overboost code (but I see you are running an Edge Drag/Comp)???

George,

I haven't had the code again since I started this thread. Of course, I have had snow and ice on the ground for most of the last month. I need to have the underlying codes read. Since I don't have a code reader, I will eventually take it to an AutoZone and let them read the codes for me.
