I was in Des Moines today with my truck and stopped to look for a couple plastic fasteners. Up to this point truck ran right as rain. However I go to take off, truck starts missing and puffing gray smoke real bad. It died twice before I got it out of thier parking lot. I was able to get it across the street into the parking lot. It will idle, but anything above that it misses real bad. I pulled the codes and I came up with P1693, and P0500. Neither of these seem like they with keep it from running. Will a bad lift pump throw a code. If this sounds like it's the problem, I need to know all the tools and any tips to change it out. I will have to change it in the parking lot. I live 2 hours away so I need to have it done tomorrow, so like I said, I need to know just about everything needed to do this. I filled the truck up a week ago, and at the station I usually use. This is real nice with it snowing tonight  Truck does not have a fuel pressure gauge. I WILL be ordering one tomorrow!

Thanks in advance

I have gotten those two codes when ever I burnout or spin the tires a lot in the rain or snow. When you get in the truck like you are going to start it... turn the key so the wait to start light comes on then goes off and bump the starter but dont start it,then do it again, (wait a sec or 2 beween each) and on the third time you should be able to hear the lift pump cucle for about 20 seconds or so if you dont it is definatley dead. My only thing about that is that the truck should run ok for a short time with no lift pump (a reason that injection pumps get burned up is because no one knows the lift pump quit), and I would think that you would have other codes as well but your IP might be on the way out.....

P1693 is the APPS or TPS as some refer to it. Unless I stand corrected. Not sure what the PO500 is. I had both the APPS and the VP44 die on me and the code for the APPS was P1693 according to the dealership and the latest issue of the TDR. I tried to get a new APPS from Cummins and they said that Chrysler put a restriction on it, only get it from them. It cost me $392 for a new APPS and it was very easy to replace. I see you have the auto in your truck and I believe the APPS for autos was somewhere around $500-$600.

If thats what it is you just disconnect the cruise and accelerator cables then remove I think 6 bolts and unplug the wire harness to it. The APPS is just above the VP44.

I thought 1693 was DTC detected in PCM or ECM. In order to find out you will need a scan tool.

0500 I believe is no speed sensor signal. Does your speedometer work??

The 1693 is a companion code, meaning something else is causing it to come on. P0500 is a Speed sensor. My left front sensor needs replaced.

Soes this sound like symptoms of lift pump failure. Like I said It would idle pretty good, but nothing above it. I changed the fuel filter last month with my last oil change.

Yeah, 1693 just means there are more codes (scan tool to read them unfortunately).

0500 is usually from spinning the tires too much. I have gotten this many times from driving in the snow. (I have this code right now as a matter of fact!)

Neither of these is your problem, but you need a scan tool to find the real problem.

Don't rule out the fuel filter. It only takes one bad tank of gas to plug one up bad.

Almost sounds like you have air in the fuel. But a bad LP can cause symptoms very similiar to this as well.

If the 0500 code can be the wheel speed sensor , maybe your companion code will be related to the ABS system. Just a thought. . Is your brake or ABS light on as well?
