Just returned from a 10K+ trip to Alaska towing about 7,000 lbs. No problems with performance and no codes. Got home, dropped the trailer, 2 days later started the truck and got a MIL. Went to Autozone for the scanner and got the P1693 with 2 instances of P0216. Reset the codes. They have not reappeared in about 200 miles.

Shop manual infers possible fuel restriction problem. I have relocated the lift pump (new pump) and added a pusher (Carter) both on the frame. Also 147 micron prescreen between tank and pusher. Have dropped the tank and inspected both tank and internal screen. It was perfectly clean. All hoses changed to marine grade diesel rated. This was done about 8 months ago. My fuel pressure runs about 18 at idle (full gauges) and may drop to 15-16 at WOT. I do notice a difference when starting when engine is hot. Takes about 2-3 turns before catching. Cold is 1/2 turn. Before pump was added the hot start was like the cold start. Instant. Fuel filter changed and showed no contamination. Barely soiled. There does seems to be a delay in showing pressure on start. Maybe about 2 seconds.

Is my 18 PSI a potential problem? If so how would I regulate it and what would be optimum max F/P?

Should I be ordering a VP44?

Any other thoughts?

Search 0216 code and you'll see that this is your message that your VP44 is likely to die. It varies from truck to truck as to when. I threw this code over 600 times over six months, and had random episodes of "dead pedal". This was almost five years ago when there was minimal TDR info, so I finally replaced the pump (first one) before total failure. I could clear the code and it would be back within 5 miles of driving.

Second and third VP died suddenly, and I hadn't checked for codes because I had no reason to. The code was there on both failures, when I checked. Never got a MIL on any of them.

Like the post above said yes your IP pump will go out as to when

can't say but I always figured it was better to change it in the drive than beside the road some where. :{
