LP just went out on 00 stock. Replaced the lp and ran great for about a week now at idle it cuts out every now and then but runs fine down the road. Is it possible not to be a vp44 going bad? What else could the p1693 be from, i'm afraid its the vp44 because lp was bad for awhile before i fixed it.

Andy,

The 1693 is a companion code. There should be another code set in the pcm or vice versa. You typically need a scanner that speaks cummins to get it. Some members that are more familiar with the 24v should be able to offer more. We just picked up a 98 with 207k and the lp died when I put a pressure gauge on and started it in the dealer lot. It has the 1693 code as well. I have not gotten the other code. I installed one of the GDP pumps and it has been running exceptionally well with good constant pressures. Have you been able to test the fuel pressure at idle and under load? The 1693 doesn't always mean the VP.

Yeah i'm aware it doesn't always mean the vp. Yes I have got a gauge on it on the lp and tested both under load and idle and it was good. I'm just afraid that the vp is about the only thing left to cause the problem and it seems the vp typically goes out after the lp if the lp was not caught in time and this went for awhile before my budy got with me to change the pump. lp was completely dead no pressure what so ever. Hooking a computer to it sunday.

Go to autozone, they will scan and clear the codes for free. I would just clear the codes and reset the apps. Disconnect both batterys for a couple hours, leave the headlights on while the batterys are disconnected. Turn lights off and rehook up battery's turn key to on,but dont start the truck. Slowly push the go pedel to the floor and slowly let it up, shut the key off and then start the truck. While the battery's are off, clean the terminals and all the grounds on the motor. A little electrical grease on all the plugs you can get to helps pass the time and also helps.

Good luck

Dirk

It's true that the 1693 code is a companion code. There should also be a code like 216 or ? I have seen this senario many times however. You should start shopping for a VP44 pump. I would say it's a 75% probability you need a VP44. Sorry for the bad news. Let us know if we can help. Thanks

Yeah that is what i was afraid of. I have my own snap on modus scanner so i dont need to take it somewhere. The reason why i haven't done it yet is its my buddies pickup and i got to wait tell he gets here. Thanks i let you know how it turns out.
