Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) P7100 high degrees of timing chart?

Although I am adept at finding answers for the diesel q's I have, this particular one has eluded my investigative skills (including doing several searches on my beloved TDR).



I am wanting to set P7100 timing to 20* on a highly modified truck. The timing charts I find that list degrees by pump lift go to 16* and stop. I know, I know, buy or borrow a timing light. Unfortunately no one around has one that I know of. Is there a chart showing degrees at least to 20 vs pump lift someone could point me to? Or at least what 20* timing should be? A chart would be better as we want to tweak this truck a lot so we want to try other degrees also. The CPL is 1968.

a timing light isn't going to do anything for you!



just extrapolate the numbers on whatever chart you have... it's a linear deal... same plunger lift difference = same timing difference

We did extrapolate on graph paper but the lower degrees of timing are not linear. After it reaches about 13. 5* or 14* degrees it becomes a half degree of timing per . 1 increase in lift. What we don't know is the profile of the cam in the P7100.



Are you saying the profile of the cam is linear once it gets past about 13. 5* timing?



I was told by a well known diesel shop to use a diesel timing light and that every inch of damper is 5*. Can someone confirm or deny this? What we would like to do is get factual info and then mark the damper so we CAN use the timing light.

Diameter x Pie (3. 1416) / 360 x the number of degrees you want to advance. So with a 9. 25 balancer 5 degrees is 4 tenths of an inch.

18. 5* = 6. 1

19* = 6. 2

19. 5* = 6. 3

20* = 6. 4
