I would try to talk to Larry Crawford a. k. a. Roger Rodbolt or John Porterfield. I don't know if he is on here or not. John is runnin the p-pump conversion right now, and I heard that it screams. Larry ran the p-pump for a while and did not like it. These guyz could probably help ya out. Good Luck.

Larry has changed out from the p-pump because of problems and John P. isn't running one, he just has both a 12v and a 24v truck. The list is long and exhaustive..... Plus labor and tuning is a whole issue in itself. Can it be done, yes. But the question is why? If ultimate HP is what you are looking for then its worth doing. If its just for concern over vp44 failure then I wouldn't recommend it.

Jetpilot, I could have swore at Scheids that John P. 's truck had a p-pump on it. Myabe that was his boys truck. There was a blue one and I think the other one was red. Maybe it wasn't his truck. Oh well. There goes my two suggestions out the window.

Pardon the Ignorance, I am new here and I am trying to decide 12 or 24 valve truck, from what you guys are saying there really is no need, I want to get to about 350rwhp, I have real close to that with my Powerstroke , I really like the 98 and newer trucks beter anyhow. I am going to be the dumb guy asking lots of questions, I just want to make sure i make the right choice THIS TIME... I love the power of the stroke and thats why i bought it but i dislike the Ford part.

Buy a 99 or newer truck. Forget the P-pump conversion unless you have a specific reason or need. Cost can be anywhere from $4000 to $8000 depending on what your connections are. Get a truck with a VP44... add an Edge Comp box, perhaps some injectors, a free flow exhaust and air intake. Make sure your lift pump is working properly and add EGT, Boost and fuel pressure gauges. Enjoy the horsepower. I'm sure you'd be amazed at what you can get out of the VP44 with simple easy mods. Spend your time driving and not wrenching for no huge advantage. Good luck.

Figure $700 for a Comp Box, $750 for some level two type injectors, $200 for an air intake, $500 for a 4" exhaust... and $175 for a new lift pump (if you even need one). Maybe add $50 for some bigger fuel fittings/banjo bolts. Throw in $400 for gauges and mounts. Spend a day or two installing and you'll be set and happy.

Otherwise plan on spending tons of cash and time collecting all the 12V conversion parts. Then you'll need to tune it. Of course thats a stock setup. You'll still need to modify that setup for high horsepower. So add in all the other things like exhaust and such and you can see what you'll have to spend.

From what I understand, there hasn't been anyone that has done converted the 24v to a P7100 pump *successfully* where all the geewhiz electronic gizmos still worked, like the odometer and the cc, with the possible one exception of that blue 2500 QC 4x4 that Diesel Dynamics did a conversion to (and I'm not sure of that  ).

I was informed by knowledgeable sources that it is more feasible to pull the 24v and install a 12v, but the geewhiz electronic gizmos still need to be dealt with and this alone takes over a week of labor to do it right where everything works like it is supposed to. I am serious about doing this to my 01 and I am looking into it.

Does anyone know of a conversion of this nature where everything worked just like it was supposed to after the conversion??? I am aware of only the one 12v conversion.

Piers did mine and everything worked. but, I did have that check engine light on all the time. Guess the truck couldn't find the vp-44 :)

Doug, that's great that yours has worked out so well for you.

I was talking to Mark at PDR and he advised me that PDR is really not interested in doing that conversion anymore because of the headaches, hassles, and the taking up of shop space, but who knows. And he said the parts cost alone was something like $5,800.

So buy a '98 12-valve... I have two 12-valve '2nd Gen' ('94 thru '98. 4) trucks and love 'em to bits. You can't beat 'em for the bang for the buck factor and overall simplicity of the whole package. I could speak for days about why you should get a 12-valve... and if you ever really want to know all about it - I can give you a phone call.
