Took the pump off yesterday, it is leaking oil. I hope I don't have to do that job again for awhile. Although the FSM is pretty good, it does miss a few steps, something I learned way back when I had to replace a head gasket. For those of you who envision having to do the job someday, make a couple notes. The FSM instructs you to disconnect the fuel shut down solenoid. While you are there, disconnect the harness to the cruise control also to get it out of the way and pop the wire bundle holder from the stud at the rear of the engine. It has you removing the throttle control bracket but fails to have you disconnect the throttle rod from the pump. You also have to disconnect the return fuel line hose or figure out how to get to the bottom rear bolt that clamps the hard line on. Farther down you remove the fuel lines from the delivery valves. Only a contortionist could lift the pump out with the lines still attached to the engine. BTW, it weighs 44. 5 pounds. Disconnect them from the injectors, remove the engine mount clamps and remove the lines as an assy. I also removed the fuel filter for more maneuver space. Additionally, if you have a Jacobs EB or another with the microswitch bracket mounted to the gear case, remove it too.
One other thing I learned was the old adage that it takes an hour for the oil to drain from the pump is false. It doesn't drain out even if you wait overnight! There was about a quart of oil in it. Definitely the reason the oil is dark immediately after an oil change.
Of interest to some is I carried my stock governor springs, the stock fuel plate and AFC spring with me, just in case. My intuition was good, the Austin Bosch shop would rather bench test them with the stock components. The tech said he would reinstall my parts after the pump is rebuilt. No mileage limit on the warranty either
